2025 was undoubtedly an off year for the Philadelphia Eagles. The organization is used to sustained success throughout the season, and despite winning the NFC East with an 11-6 record, turmoil surrounded the team, with much of it stemming from Jalen Hurts’ performance. His lackluster season, combined with an early playoff exit, has media floating the possibility of drafting a quarterback in just a couple of weeks. What do fans think?
Ex-Eagles Player Sound Off on the Possibility of Drafting a Quarterback To Replace Jalen Hurts
Philadelphia sports radio station 94WIP host Joe Giglio believes the Eagles should focus on the quarterback in this year’s draft and look to replace Hurts, though 3-time Pro Bowler Hugh Douglas countered this chain of thought.
He said, “Need to replenish the offensive line. We need to get a safety. We need to figure out. We got it. Have a lot of other positions that we need to figure out. So it’s one of those things where, taking a quarterback that high this year, that, and we don’t know what Jalen is, or we feel like Jalen is gonna be better. I don’t think that’s smart.”
Hurts was the subject of major criticism during the season, as his inconsistent play led to holistic offensive ineffectiveness.
At times, he struggled with accuracy and his timing in the passing game, forcing the Eagles to punt or settle for field goals too often.
Simple route concepts throughout the 2025 campaign led many to question whether he’d lost his ability to read defenses from the pocket, or how well he’d been able to do so before this year.
He’d finish the season with 3,224 yards and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 25:6, earning him a 78.3 grade according to PFSN’s QB Impact Grades, placing him 15th among qualified quarterbacks.
Hurts’ Production and Playstyle
It’s important to note that Hurts has never passed for 4,000 yards in a season, as he’s relied on his running ability to open up windows in the passing game. It’s a strategy that’s worked in previous years, even helping the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs, though defenses seem to be catching on.
Hurts’ unwillingness to play under center has reportedly been an issue, according to a former Eagles’ scout, which wouldn’t allow former offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo to open the playbook as much as he likely would’ve preferred.

He’s still under contract through 2028, after signing a $255 million contract extension in 2023. He’s set to make $51.5 million in 2026, and another $51.5 million in 2027 – a relatively cheap contract for a quarterback that has multiple Super Bowl appearances and a Super Bowl MVP on his resume.
If the Eagles were to add a quarterback early in the draft, it’d likely be Alabama’s Ty Simpson, who landed at pick 43 to the Miami Dolphins in PFSN’s latest 3-round mock, though we’ll need to wait a couple more weeks to see if they decide to bolster the quarterback room.
