The Senior Bowl is an opportunity for young, gifted college football players to prove they belong while improving their NFL Draft stock. In the process, how are the Senior Bowl teams chosen? Here is a look at the process that determines which players take the field in Mobile.
How Are The Senior Bowl Teams Chosen?
The Senior Bowl has built a strong reputation as a premier all-star event in college football. The game serves as a showcase for top prospects to compete against elite peers while increasing their visibility ahead of the NFL Draft.
Senior Bowl executive director Drew Fabianich told Fox the selection process begins with a broad pool of prospects and follows a tiered approach similar to the NFL’s draft board. He said players are evaluated in order, and if higher-ranked prospects are unavailable or choose to return to school, the next tier of players moves up.

Fabianich noted the process requires months of film study, debate, and evaluation. The ultimate goal, he said, is to identify the best draft-eligible players in the country.
“It’s a tiered process, and it’s just like the vertical board that’s used to set up the NFL. If you had 18 guys in the first round in the NFL, well, if those 18 were gone, then you went on to the ones that you had in the second round. Because again, it’s just like recruiting. If the first two guys say no, well then you move them up. Or the first two guys decide they’re going to go back to school, well, then those two guys move up. So it’s all a stacking process of top player in the position, all the way down to the bottom,” Fabianich said.
The process of selecting players for both teams closely mirrors the structure of an NFL draft board. Prospects are grouped by position and tiered by talent, with evaluations constantly shifting as new information becomes available.
The board includes more than 300 prospects, but opportunities are limited, as only about 140 players receive Senior Bowl invitations. Simply earning an invite can be a significant boost for any prospect looking to elevate his draft profile.
For many players, a standout performance at the Senior Bowl can significantly enhance their NFL aspirations. The event’s scale and visibility provide a platform for prospects to prove themselves against NFL-caliber talent in front of key decision-makers.
