Drake Maye Enters Super Bowl Among NFL’s Youngest Starters

Maye will be 23 years and 162 days old on Super Bowl Sunday, making him one of the youngest quarterbacks ever to start in the big game. With just 60 games under his belt between college and the NFL, Maye is still very young.

Most Super Bowl quarterbacks are usually veterans, so Maye is one of the few outliers in the last 5 years. He is already ahead of the game and has had a very strong 2026 campaign.

According to Next Gen Stats, “Maye is the first quarterback to lead the NFL in completion percentage prior to their 24th birthday since Hall of Famer Joe Montana in 1980. That is also the 2nd-highest passer rating ever by a quarterback age 23 or younger, trailing only Patrick Mahomes’ mark of 113.8 in 2018.”

Although his stats haven’t looked as good in the playoffs, he has faced each of the top 3 scoring defenses in 2025, beating the Texans and the Broncos, and now faces the Seahawks.

During a media appearance earlier in the week, Maye acknowledged the position he is in as a young quarterback:

“To experience the Big Game, to experience that at such a young age is a blessing,” he said. “Knowing that we’ve got guys on this team that have played 10 to 14 years that never made it and knowing how much of an opportunity we have this week… (to) go win the Super Bowl, that sounds pretty good.”

Maye grew up in North Carolina and played high school football in Charlotte. He attended college in North Carolina, where he became an NFL prospect thanks to his arm talent and leadership off the field.

The Patriots ended up selecting Maye in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, picking the UNC quarterback with the third overall pick. After sitting out a few games in 2024, Maye improved tremendously before his sophomore year. In just his second season, Maye has led the Patriots back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019.

In 2025, he threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He led the league in completion percentage (72.0), yards per attempt (8.9), QBR (77.1), and passer rating (113.5).

In the regular season, the Patriots were the No. 2 offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric (OFFi), with Drake Maye leading the offense to the third most total yards per game (379.4).
