Have you ever wondered how the NFL manages to print custom jerseys in seconds, just in time to hand them to draft picks walking on stage? It almost feels like magic, but behind the scenes, a chaotic, high-pressure system is at work making it happen.
NFL Draft Day has long followed the tradition of players walking across the stage to greet the commissioner. By the time they get there, Roger Goodell is already waiting with a jersey in hand, representing the team that selected the player only seconds earlier.
The player barely has time to leave the green room and put on their new team hat before the jersey beats them to the stage. So, how exactly does it all come together?
Chaotic NFL Jersey Printing Process
Just offstage, the unsung heroes of the draft are standing by, ready to go. They’re among the first to get word of the pick, just before the commissioner steps on stage to announce it.
Once the name is received, they retrieve the correct jersey. There are usually at least five prepped for each team. Things get tricky with teams that have unique fonts or alternate designs, like the Baltimore Ravens.
Wrote this a few years ago but holds up:
How do they get the names on the No. 1 jerseys so quickly? Just off the stage is a room with at least five blank jerseys for every team. There’s also a nameplate for every player attending the draft — and … (CONT)

Everything must happen within two minutes. Some hands one jersey to the commissioner for the big moment. The other? That one’s chopped up for rookie trading cards.
Yes — those cards you see with game-used patches? They’re not game-used. They’re often “draft-used.” These patches appear in premium rookie patch autographs and relic cards, particularly for breakout players such as C.J. Stroud or Jayden Daniels.
Pressure to Get It Right on NFL Draft Day
There’s never been a public mishap — no misspelled names, no crooked prints. But the pressure is real. One wrong letter or misplaced number, and that player’s photo holding the jersey would be a forever embarrassment.
For a rookie just entering the league, holding up a botched jersey on national TV would be a nightmare. It simply can’t happen.
According to people close to the process, the most stressful moments are when a team trades up and makes a pick immediately after. Sometimes, the commissioner announces the trade and follows it up immediately with the name of the player, leaving those behind the scenes scrambling.
It’s a lot to juggle. However, the jersey team remains undefeated so far.
This season, they have likely settled on the jerseys for the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, but things might get interesting with the New York Giants.
