How Can Tyreek Hill Sign With an NFL Team Now? Why the WR Doesn’t Have To Wait Until March 11 Free-Agency Period

Tyreek Hill was surprisingly released by the Miami Dolphins and began a quiet scramble among NFL franchises to sign the wide receiver.

The Miami Dolphins surprised everyone by announcing the release of wide receiver Tyreek Hill, freeing the 31-year-old athlete from his contractual obligations. Since then, speculation has begun about which franchises the player might join in the future, but many have little doubt he will sign with a team at this point in the NFL season.

Tyreek Hill Is Free To Sign With NFL Teams Immediately

Due to the fact that he was released from his contract, Hill instantly becomes one of the most coveted free agents on the market.

Teams looking for a starting WR and positioning themselves as Super Bowl contenders are likely to approach the player in the coming days.

Hill was scheduled to take up more than $51 million of the salary cap if he remained, so Miami decided that amount was unsustainable, especially considering other high contracts on the roster.

Despite the savings, the franchise will still incur dead money of about $28 million due to the previously agreed-upon signing bonus.

As Field Yates reports: “Because he was released from his contract, Tyreek Hill becomes a free agent and is immediately eligible to sign with another team. While it’s unclear when Hill intends to find a new home, he does not have to wait until March 13, as free agents on expiring deals do.”

One of Miami’s key players, Hill (who ranked No. 35 in the PFSN WR Impact metric with a C+ grade in the 2024 season), joined the franchise in 2022 through an explosive trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. After a season with seven touchdowns and 1,710 yards, the WR secured a four-year, $120 million extension.

In his second season, he led the NFL in receiving yards (1,799) and scored 13 TDs, but the Dolphins failed to make it past the Wild Card after an 11-6 record.

The following season, he suffered a wrist injury and struggled with a lack of deep passes from Tua Tagovailoa. After offseason surgery, he entered 2025 looking to regain his best form, but he tore his ACL in four games and never returned to the field.

So, what are the best options for Hill? Several options are available at this point, but a return to the Chiefs would be the most ideal scenario, considering the franchise’s attempts to find new explosive options for Patrick Mahomes.

Another option is the Houston Texans, with a young and rising roster led by C.J. Stroud. Finally, the New York Jets are also an option to rekindle a partnership with Aaron Rodgers (if the quarterback stays).
