Steve Young Provides Advice For Drake Maye After Super Bowl 60 Performance

Maye’s performance in the Super Bowl was disastrous. He was overwhelmed by the Seahawks’ defense, which pressured him with multiple packages throughout the game and forced three turnovers, including a pick-six in the fourth quarter that put the nail in the coffin.

Despite the poor outing, Maye’s overall season was excellent. He finished second in the MVP voting, losing only to Matthew Stafford. Most importantly, he led the Patriots back to the Super Bowl after a 4-13 season in 2024, showcasing how much the team improved under Mike Vrabel’s leadership.

His season exceeded expectations. Still, the Super Bowl performance showed that Maye has room to grow. On Monday, a former Super Bowl MVP offered advice to him. Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Steve Young noted that Maye should take lessons from the 2025 season and use Sunday’s setback as motivation to go even further in 2026:

“Everything he learned this season, including the Super Bowl… he’s now seen it. He’s now seen the killer teams. And with that knowledge, there’s a sharpening of the saw that happens. Like, ‘I’m a pretty good player, I’m young,’ but now there’s no more learning. ‘I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it. I’ve been there. And now I want back.'”

Learning and taking notes are things Young can relate to well. He was Joe Montana’s backup for several years with the San Francisco 49ers before finally taking over as the starter in 1991 after the veteran’s injury. He won Super Bowl 29 as a starter in 1994.

Maye finished the year with excellent numbers. He threw for 31 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, and 4,394 yards, and completed 72% of his passes. His performances were well rated by the metrics, with PFSN’s QB Impact Metric ranking him as the No. 2 quarterback for the season with a 91.1 grade, just behind Brock Purdy with a 92.1 grade.

With a coaching staff led by Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels, the young quarterback will continue his development under two proven leaders in the league. The Patriots are accustomed to success, and Maye played at a very high level in 2025. New England fans can expect more of the same when next season begins.
