Seeing the medical cart come out for a young player is the last thing a 2-11 team wants to witness. That was the grim scene for the New York Giants in Week 13, as running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. exited the game against the New England Patriots with a hip injury. In a season defined by struggles, losing Tracy just before the bye week looked like another disastrous turn for New York.
However, Tuesday brought a surprising update regarding his status for the rest of the year.
How Serious Is Tyrone Tracy’s Injury After the Week 13 Scare?
Tracy went down early in the fourth quarter after three Patriots defenders converged on him for a tackle. The sight of him leaving on a cart suggested a potentially major setback, but the running back provided a positive update to reporters on Tuesday.
According to those on the scene, Tracy avoided long-term damage.
“Tyrone Tracy said he has a hip contusion/stinger and he’s fine,” reported Dan Duggan, a senior writer for The Athletic. “Good news because that looked bad in the moment.”

This diagnosis of a contusion or stinger comes as a massive relief for the Giants. With the team entering its bye week, the extra rest should allow Tracy to recover fully. He will likely be ready for the team’s next matchup in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders, meaning he should miss no game time.
Tracy’s health is critical given the chaotic nature of New York’s backfield during the 2025 campaign. The second-year pro started the year atop the depth chart but lost the job after dislocating his shoulder in Week 3. That injury opened the door for rookie Cam Skattebo, who thrived in the starting role while Tracy recovered.
The situation shifted again in Week 8 when Skattebo suffered a season-ending dislocation of the ankle against the Philadelphia Eagles. Skattebo’s injury forced Tracy back into the primary role, where he has remained productive despite the team’s struggles.
Tracy has carried the ball 113 times for 434 yards and a touchdown this season, averaging 3.8 yards per carry. He has also contributed in the passing game, hauling in 22 receptions for 203 yards.
Currently, Tracy ranks as the No. 45 running back in PFSN’s 2025 NFL running back impact rankings with a score of 68.3 (D+). He figures to remain an integral piece of the offense down the stretch. If his hip issue proves more stubborn than expected, veteran Devin Singletary would be the next man up. For now, the Giants can focus on getting healthy during the bye week as they look to play spoiler and build momentum heading into the 2026 season.
