Russell Wilson isn’t seeing the field much anymore, but it wasn’t that long ago when he was one of the most feared quarterbacks in the NFL.
Now with the New York Giants, Wilson utilized his bye week to appear as a guest analyst on “The NFL Today” on CBS Sports in Week 14. That gave fans a glimpse of what Wilson’s future could be, but the quarterback posted a cryptic message on social media Wednesday that implied his playing days aren’t close to being over.
Russell Wilson Ready to Get Back to Dominant Ways
Wilson started the first three games of the season for the Giants before being benched in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart. Even later in the season, when Dart got injured, the team chose to insert Jameis Winston as the starter instead of Wilson.
The downfall of Wilson’s career has been a topic of heavy discussion over the last few seasons. Wilson is a Super Bowl champion and a 10-time Pro Bowler, but lately, he hasn’t even been able to secure a starting job.
On Wednesday, NFL reporter Michael Ritter posted on X that “2017-20 Russell Wilson would be the best QB in the NFL if he played today.” This post seemed to resonate with Wilson, who responded cryptically.
“Man… I gotta get back to ballin’ & being Me,” Wilson declared. “Back to my first 10. It’s time. Time to go dark.”
Man… I gotta get back to Ballin’ & being Me.
Back to my First 10.
It’s time. Time to go Dark. https://t.co/TDwx0gz17R— Russell Wilson (@DangeRussWilson) December 10, 2025
Wilson is referring to his first 10 years in the league, from 2012 to 2021, all of which were spent with the Seattle Seahawks. In that stretch, Wilson made the Pro Bowl in nine of 10 seasons, won a Super Bowl, and became the Seahawks’ all-time passing leader.
After the 2021 season, Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos. The quarterback inked a massive five-year, $245 million extension with the team, but things never worked out in Denver for a myriad of reasons.

Wilson didn’t come anywhere close to the level he was at in Seattle, and the Broncos ended up releasing Wilson after just two seasons. The quarterback then latched on with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, but he was unable to find much success there either.
Wilson Should Have Options This Offseason
Wilson signed a one-year deal worth $10.5 million with the Giants last offseason. It seems clear that the veteran doesn’t have a future in New York, so he will likely try to latch on with a new team again in 2025.
PFSN’s QB Impact ranking gives Wilson a 60.6 grade for his 2025 performance. Even still, there should be some interest in Wilson, as there’s no denying that he’s one of the best quarterbacks of his generation.
A quarterback-needy team may offer Wilson another low-risk, one-year deal to see if he can finally turn his career around. It certainly seems that the veteran isn’t planning on hanging up the cleats just yet, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
