John Harbaugh landed in New York less than two weeks after the Baltimore Ravens fired him following an 8-9 season in which they missed the playoffs. The Giants gave the Super Bowl-winning coach a five-year deal reportedly worth $100 million, and tasked him with changing the culture of a team that went 4-13 in 2025 and has won just 13 games over the past three seasons.
The building blocks are there for Harbaugh to work with in New York. Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo, and first-round pick Arvell Reese give the head coach a young core to mold. The question is how he molds them, and that’s where Zay Flowers’ comments sparked a debate.
Tiki Barber Takes Issue With Zay Flowers’ Complaint
Flowers appeared on the “4th And South w/ Jarvis Landry & Leonard Fournette” podcast in April and linked Harbaugh’s practice methods to the Ravens’ injury problems.
“Bro, we’re doing 1-on-1s in Week 17,” the Ravens receiver said. “Everybody out there, you’re tired, you’re still going. That was low-key why we had a lot of injuries, because of how we practiced, how we went, the load was heavy.”
Former Giants running back Tiki Barber, the franchise’s all-time leading rusher, didn’t hold back on WFAN Sports Radio.
“Would you rather the alternative [and] listen to the soft a** players like Zay Flowers saying stuff like, ‘You know, I want to practice less,’ and then be crappy and win five games, you know, half of your career?” Barber said. “Or would you rather have a hard-a** coach who drives it out of you, is constantly focused on making you better, and is always winning?”
“So, I don’t get the point,” he added. “What the hell are you talking about, Zay Flowers? You’re being soft-minded, and the one sport, professional sport, that you cannot be soft-minded in is the NFL, because you will get the crap knocked out of you. It kind of pisses me off when I hear people talk… are you serious? Do you know what game you’re playing?”

Barber’s frustration reflects a broader sentiment among Giants fans who have watched the franchise drift since its last Super Bowl win in 2012. Harbaugh’s demanding practice style could be the key that turns Dart, Nabers, Skattebo, and Reese from talented players into reliable veterans.
In a stacked NFC East featuring the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Commanders, the Giants can’t afford to ease into contention. They have a great group of promising players, but need Harbaugh to extract the most out of them.

According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Giants’ offense ranked 24th in the league last season, and keeping players like Dart, Skattebo, and Nabers healthy will be the team’s priority.
It will be interesting to see whether Harbaugh’s intensity becomes the foundation of something the Giants’ franchise hasn’t had in years.
