George Kittle suffered an injury in the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The 49ers won 17-13, but their star tight end has not played since.
The All-Pro left the season opener in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return. His recovery timeline is set, and it’s far from what fans or fantasy managers had hoped for.
George Kittle Injury Update
A day after the 49ers’ season opener, Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Kittle will miss “a few weeks.” San Francisco will now be without one of its key offensive weapons for at least the first month of the season, with hopes for a mid-October return.
On Tuesday, September 9, the 49ers placed Kittle on injured reserve. He’ll be out at least until Week 6. “49ers are placing Pro Bowl TE George Kittle on injured reserve,” wrote NFL insider Adam Schefter. “Meaning he now will miss at least the next four games. Kittle injured his hamstring during Sunday’s win over Seattle.”
Ahead of the 49ers’ Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams, NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on Kittle’s return timeline. He revealed that the star tight end is expected to play in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, Shanahan provided a concerning update on Kittle’s return timeline on Friday. “49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told reports that TE George Kittle, who has been on IR due to a hamstring injury, is more likely to return in Week 7 vs. Atlanta than next week in Week 6 vs. Tampa Bay,” wrote NFL insider Adam Schefter. “A return for next Sunday is considered a “long shot.”
Replacing Kittle’s blocking prowess and his ability to create mismatches as a pass catcher won’t be easy. The 49ers are 3-1 on the season, but they need their star tight end back as soon as possible.
Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending injury in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals. Apart from him, players like Ricky Pearsall, Brock Purdy, and Jauan Jennings are also on the injury report for Week 5.
Purdy has already missed two games this season and returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Unfortunately, he suffered another injury and missed Week 5.
Kittle’s Fantasy Outlook
George Kittle was doing George Kittle things until he decided to do less fun George Kittle things in the Week 1 win over the Seahawks.
Early on, he caught all four of his targets and scored on an extension play to the pylon, where he flexed his athleticism and awareness. When he’s right, he’s as good as it gets at the position.
The problem is that we almost always have to navigate injuries, and that is already the case in 2024.
What causes Kittle to miss time is the same mindset that makes him an elite option when active. He is still likely to return before the National Tight Ends Day (Oct. 25) and offer the type of strong production we’ve come to know and love.
