The San Francisco 49ers suffered their first loss of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars at home last Sunday. It was a game marked by several collective mistakes, made worse by injuries and players pushing through pain to compensate for the depleted roster.
Brock Purdy returned to the field after missing two weeks with a turf toe injury, but he didn’t play well and clearly didn’t look 100% yet. As expected, Purdy was not fully recovered.
Will Brock Purdy Play in Week 5?
The 49ers’ season is starting to feel like a repeat of years past, even after opening with three wins and just one loss. Once again, injuries are piling up, forcing Shanahan to improvise with less talented players and push his stars onto the field before they are fully healthy.
That was clear in the loss to the Jaguars, as the top receivers practiced in a limited capacity all week. Ricky Pearsall left the game injured, and Jauan Jennings dealt with an ankle issue. But the biggest concern remains at quarterback, specifically Purdy’s turf toe.
Initial reports suggested Purdy would miss anywhere from two to five weeks, with a longer absence expected. After limited practices since Week 3, the 49ers rushed him back, but he again complained of pain in the same toe injured in Week 1.
Purdy did not practice on Monday, and there is a possibility he might not play in Week 5. “Brock Purdy did not practice on the estimated practice report today,” wrote NFL insider Ian Rapoport. “He’s dealing with toe soreness. Mac Jones, who would start if Purdy can’t, was a full participant.”
On Tuesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed that Purdy is questionable for Week 5. “We will take every precaution to make sure Brock’s all right,” Lynch said, as per 49ers insider David Lombardi. I think he is, now it’s just a matter of can he turn it around on a short week?”
NFL insider Adam Schefter later confirmed that Purdy did not practice on Tuesday. “Two days before they play the Rams in LA, there will be no practice again today for 49ers QB Brock Purdy (toe), and WRs Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs) and Ricky Pearsall (knee),” he wrote on X.
On Wednesday, the 49ers confirmed that Purdy will not play in Week 5 against the Rams. Mac Jones is set to start his third game of the season. Jones himself is dealing with a PCL injury that he aggravated in Week 3 against the Cardinals.

During the game, it was evident Purdy was uncomfortable, unable to generate the same ground force in his throws. Many passes floated, and while he still connected on some good plays, he clearly wasn’t the healthy version of the quarterback who became the league’s seventh-highest-paid at his position.
He finished the game with 309 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also had a lost fumble on the decisive drive, where the team moved the ball well down the field.
Why San Francisco continues to be hit by a wave of injuries year after year remains difficult to explain. But even with a promising start, this season is beginning to look like another frustrating chapter for a franchise stuck in a cycle of rebuilding without a stable core to build a long-term contender.
