What Happened to George Kittle? A Look at Why the 49ers Star Is Not Playing on SNF vs. Bears

Here's the latest update on why George Kittle is unavailable as the San Francisco 49ers take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday Night Football.

The San Francisco 49ers close out Week 17 on Sunday Night Football with a matchup that will have major implications in the NFC’s playoff picture.

George Kittle sustained an ankle injury in the Monday win over the Indianapolis Colts and was officially listed as questionable after not practicing all week. San Francisco, still chasing the NFC West lead, evaluated Kittle’s ankle during warmups, and the tight end will be inactive tonight.

With the Chicago Bears on the other side, contested areas and timing on intermediate throws will be central, and the game will be challenging for the 49ers without Kittle.

George Kittle Injury Update

Kittle exited the Colts game in the third quarter with an ankle sprain and was questionable for Sunday night after not practicing this week. He told reporters postgame he believed the injury resulted from an illegal hip‑drop tackle; the NFL reviewed the incident and found no irregularities, with no fines issued to the Colts.

On Saturday night, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Kittle will test his ankle pregame to determine availability, noting that while players who don’t practice all week often sit.

The 32‑year‑old missed five games earlier this season due to a hamstring injury; a sixth absence would depend on how the ankle responds during warmups.

The 49ers made the decision after evaluating Kittle during pregame drills, consistent with the report that his final status will be determined closer to kickoff. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kittle’s chance of playing tonight was low.

“49ers TE George Kittle, listed as questionable for Sunday night due to a sprained ankle that prevented him from practicing last week, is “highly unlikely” to play vs. the Bears, per source,” Schefter wrote on X.

The 49ers’ offensive plan against the Bears emphasizes rhythm, protection discipline, and balanced sequencing to avoid third-and-long situations. With Kittle out, the 49ers will script personnel groupings to maximize matchups in the slot and on the perimeter, pairing quick-game answers with selective intermediate shots to keep the Bears honest.

Defensively, San Francisco’s focus is on limiting explosives, tackling cleanly in space, and controlling field position to reduce short-field exposure.

For Chicago, compressing windows and disrupting routes early in the down is key to blunting San Francisco’s passing rhythm. Special teams and hidden yards often swing close night games, and the final inactives will clarify route depth, return units, and sub‑package roles.

San Francisco 49ers’ Stats and Insights for Week 17

Team: The San Francisco 49ers have clinched a playoff spot. If the 49ers win their final two games, they will win the NFC West and be the top seed in the NFC.

QB: Brock Purdy registered a QBi score of 85.6 (B) in Week 16 against the Colts. The performance helped Purdy pass Josh Allen for the top spot in the QBi season rankings.

Offense: The 49ers have scored 85 points and have not punted in the last two games. In 18 drives, they scored nine touchdowns, made five field goals, had two turnovers, a missed field goal, and a kneel-down to end a game.

Defense: The 49ers have nine takeaways during the current five-game win streak.

Fantasy: Jauan Jennings has scored in four straight, and Brock Purdy has consecutive games looking like the uber-efficient QB we know him to be. Jennings is a nice play in all formats, and that status doesn’t hinge on the health of Ricky Pearsall.
