The San Francisco 49ers have opened the season dealing with turbulence, as injuries continue to hit key players on the roster, including quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle. Expected to be a central piece of the offensive game plan, Kittle went down in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Despite the setbacks, the 49ers are 2-0, with both wins coming on the road, showing resilience in the face of issues that in past years have slowed the team’s momentum. Here’s a look at Kittle’s injury and when the All-Pro tight end is expected to return to the field for San Francisco.
What Is George Kittle’s Injury, and When Will He Return to Action?
The 49ers went through a transformative offseason in 2025. The roster, once considered the most star-studded in the NFL, was dismantled and replaced with a mix of veterans and young players, aiming to balance the salary cap and refresh the energy of a team that had fallen short in recent years in pursuit of the Super Bowl.
Some players were chosen as the new cornerstones of the team, such as Kittle, who signed an extension this offseason and became the highest-paid tight end in the NFL, averaging $19.1 million per year. With Deebo Samuel’s departure and Brandon Aiyuk’s injury, Kittle was set to be the focal point of Kyle Shanahan’s offense, at least in the passing game.
However, in the first half of the season opener against the Seahawks, after scoring a touchdown and recording four catches, Kittle felt a pull in his hamstring and was diagnosed with an injury that immediately forced him out of the game.

The injury was a major setback for the 49ers, who already had a thin group of skill players and now had to rethink the entire game plan built around a heavy workload for Kittle, not only in the passing game but also in pass protection and run blocking.
He was then placed on injured reserve, where he must remain for at least four weeks while recovering. He has already served the first of those games, watching the 49ers beat the New Orleans Saints on the road in a matchup that also missed Purdy, who is sidelined with a turf toe injury.

He will also be out against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3, the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, and the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5. The first game in which he will be eligible to return is against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road on October 12. If they take things slow, another possibility is Week 7’s edition of Sunday Night Football against the visiting Atlanta Falcons.
Kittle is coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and first-team All-Pro honors in 2023. San Francisco hopes to have its tight end back during the season as it tries to make a playoff push after a disappointing year.
