How Long Will George Kittle Be Out? NFL Insider Ian Rapoport Reveals Return Timeline For 49ers Star

49ers star George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1, and here's the latest on when he could make a return for San Francisco.

The San Francisco 49ers are dealing with several injuries, but none carries more weight than the loss of tight end George Kittle.

The All-Pro left the season opener in the second quarter with a hamstring injury and never returned. His recovery timeline has been set, and it’s far from what fans or fantasy managers were hoping to hear.

What Happened to George Kittle?

Kyle Shanahan said during his Monday press conference that Kittle will miss “a few weeks.” This timeline means San Francisco will be without one of its most important offensive weapons for at least the first month of the season, with hopes of a mid-October return.

On Tuesday, September 9, the 49ers decided to place Kittle on the injured reserve. He will miss at least the next four games for the NFC West franchise.

“49ers are placing Pro Bowl TE George Kittle on injured reserve,” wrote NFL insider Adam Schefter. “Meaning he now will miss at least the next four games. Kittle injured his hamstring during Sunday’s win over Seattle and now will miss games at New Orleans, vs. Atlanta, Jacksonville, and at the Rams.”

In the meantime, San Francisco will lean on depth options Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges, with Tonges catching the game-winning touchdown Sunday to secure a 17-13 victory over Seattle.

Still, replacing Kittle’s blocking prowess and his ability to create mismatches as a pass catcher won’t be easy. Before leaving the game, Kittle hauled in all four of his targets for 25 yards and a score.

Kittle wasn’t the only offensive starter injured in Sunday’s win. Quarterback Brock Purdy suffered a left shoulder injury along with a toe issue, with Shanahan noting the toe is the more serious concern and that Purdy’s status for Week 2 against the Saints remains uncertain.

“Not sure, has to see how it heals and how the week goes on it,” Shanahan said.

On top of Kittle and Purdy, the 49ers are already without wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who’s recovering from an ACL tear sustained last season. Jauan Jennings also left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. His MRI came back clean, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter, and his injury is not considered to be serious.

On Tuesday, September 9, NFL insider Ian Rapoport provided an update on Jennings’ injury. “At this point, it does not appear Jauan Jennings’ shoulder injury is serious,” he wrote. “Some good injury news after a rough one on Monday.”

For now, San Francisco will have to navigate September without Kittle, hoping he returns in time to regain form ahead of the midseason playoff push. The 49ers just need to stay afloat in the NFC race until their star tight end is back, and fantasy managers face the same challenge.
