With Super Bowl 60 kicking off tomorrow, there has been a lot of talk about the New England Patriots, but in particular, quarterback Drake Maye. If Maye wins against the Seahawks on Sunday, he would officially become the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl. During the week leading up to the Super Bowl, former Seahawks quarterback Matthew Hasselbeck gave a clear opinion on Drake Maye.
Matthew Hasselbeck Believes Drake Maye Has MVP Potential
In a conversation with PFSN’s Allison Koehler, Hasselbeck did not hesitate to talk about Maye’s upside.
“He can be an MVP player. He’s amazing. I think he’s as good as they come in every way. Everything you’re looking for in a quarterback, he’s got it in my mind,” Hasselbeck told PFSN when asked what Maye’s ceiling could be.
The praise from Hasselbeck should carry weight. The former Patriots quarterback has played in the NFL for 18 seasons and even led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl. He sees Maye as more than just a promising young player with talent, and he also talked about how he can truly elevate quarterback play across the NFL.
In addition, Hasselbeck mentioned areas where Maye can still improve, noting that these are normal for a young quarterback, but he talked about how Maye can ascend to an even better quarterback.
“I’d love to see him protect himself better. I’d love to see him fumble less, but to play how he’s playing in his second year and last year… He sat behind Jacoby Brissett for six games. Like he’s a good player, he’s going to be a great player,” Hasselbeck said.

Maye’s journey to a Super Bowl quarterback has been a rollercoaster.
The Patriots ended up selecting Maye in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, picking the UNC quarterback with the third overall pick. After sitting out a few games in 2024, Maye improved tremendously before his sophomore year. In just his second season, Maye has led the Patriots back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019.
In 2025, he threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He led the league in completion percentage (72.0), yards per attempt (8.9), QBR (77.1), and passer rating (113.5).
In the regular season, the Patriots were the No. 2 offense in PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric (OFFi), with Drake Maye leading the offense to the third most total yards per game (379.4).
Hasselbeck also highlighted the importance of the team around Maye. He said that while talent matters, a quarterback’s success often depends on the support from the organization.
“I think he’s really well coached,” Hasselbeck stated. “Having great coaches, it doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to be successful, but it creates fertile soil for you to grow in and for you to flourish, and he certainly got that and he’s in an organization that understands how to support a quarterback. And so he’s on the right trajectory.”
The New England Patriots take the field against the Seattle Seahawks at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday in Santa Clara.
