Former Cowboys HC Admits He Was ‘Wrong’ About 4-Time Pro Bowl QB Dak Prescott

A former Cowboys HC revealed how he was proven wrong by Dak Prescott after drafting the four-time Pro Bowl quarterback in 2016.

The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for their first conference championship appearance in over 30 years. They’ve tasked Dak Prescott with that responsibility for the last 10 seasons, and he hasn’t delivered yet. He’s dealt with injuries and been dealt some tough hands by Jerry Jones’ team management. But he’s still their guy to lead the team.

A former Cowboys head coach said that he got his evaluation of Prescott wrong.

Former Cowboys HC Admits Incorrect Evaluation of Dak Prescott

Jason Garrett was Prescott’s head coach from 2016 to 2019 before he was fired by the Cowboys. Although Garrett helped select Prescott, he had some doubts about Prescott’s ability to transition to the NFL.

But Prescott has proved that he belongs at this level, and at his best, he can throw it with the best QBs in the league.

“I felt like I got the evaluation of Dak Prescott wrong… My biggest thing was that I thought his transition was going to take longer because he was a gun quarterback in college. We were going to play under center, and he was going to have to be able to do that as well as do the stuff we’re asking him to do in the gun,” said Garrett.

Prescott shocked everyone in his rookie season as he led the Cowboys to a 13-3 season and proved Garrett wrong. Garrett wasn’t complaining, though, because Prescott’s success was his success as well. He doesn’t forget being proven wrong by Prescott, as it was quite the run.

“Well, you know the story. He lost his first game, then rattled off 11 straight wins,” said Garrett.

Prescott has carved out a great NFL career. He is a four-time Pro Bowler and finished as the MVP runner-up in 2023. While Prescott has had individual success, the team hasn’t quite done much itself. They’ve had some mediocre seasons, and a lot of the blame falls on Prescott’s shoulders, whether it’s deserved or not.

The Cowboys had a terrible defense in 2025, and their offense could only do so much. Prescott threw for over 4,500 yards and racked up 30 passing touchdowns.

Prescott was the 7th-ranked quarterback in the PFSN NFL QB Impact score with a score of 83.4. Despite the good numbers from Prescott, the Cowboys only won 7 games. If the Cowboys can’t figure it out defensively, Prescott’s success will likely be a lost cause.

It won’t matter whether Prescott has shown talents that Garrett wasn’t necessarily anticipating quickly, because the team doesn’t win big games. However, it remains to be seen whether history will be kind to Prescott. For now, he will have to prove his doubters wrong and lead the Cowboys to as many wins as he can.
