Fernando Mendoza Will Sign Richest Rookie Contract in NFL History

Mendoza emerged as the face of Indiana’s historic run, rising rapidly up draft boards before cementing himself as the consensus QB1 and No. 1 overall pick following the national championship win.

His physical stature, tactical intelligence, and statistical improvement have all contributed to that rise. Now is the time for the payoff.

After potentially being selected first overall, Mendoza is expected to sign a fully guaranteed four-year deal worth $54.56 million, making him the richest rookie in NFL history.

That averages $13.6 million annually, an increase of nearly $1.4 million from last year’s top pick, Cam Ward, who signed a four-year, $48.8 million deal, averaging $12.17 million annually. In 2024, Caleb Williams signed a four-year, $39.4 million contract with the Chicago Bears.

Mendoza’s deal will also include a $36.1 million signing bonus, and he will earn a salary of $9.9 million in 2026, giving him an immediate financial boost. He will not be present in the Green Room in Pittsburgh when his name is called, as he has instead opted to celebrate with family and teammates at home.

Raiders Will Have High Expectations for Mendoza

During his final college season, Mendoza demonstrated his ability to process defensive reads quickly and execute precise passes under pressure, a fit for the league’s modern QB model.

He completed 72.0% of his passes for 3,535 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, while adding 276 rushing yards and 7 rushing touchdowns. According to PFSN’s CFB Quarterback Impact Metric, he ranked as the second-best quarterback with an impact score of 93.3 and a letter grade of A.

The Raiders, who finished last season as the second-worst offense in the league according to PFSN Offense Impact Metric, will certainly be thrilled to select Mendoza, finally bringing to a close a long search for a solid quarterback after betting on young players and veterans who haven’t delivered in recent years.

With offensive weapons like Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers already in place, the expectation is that Mendoza can help unlock the unit and usher in a new era under head coach Klint Kubiak. That said, the rookie may not be rushed into action.

The Raiders signed veteran Kirk Cousins to serve as a bridge quarterback, giving Mendoza time to develop.

With mentorship from experienced veterans and the presence of Tom Brady within the organization, the Raiders believe they have built the ideal environment for their new franchise quarterback to succeed.
