Tyler Shough enters his sophomore season labeled as the man of the future for the Saints, presenting an intriguing but back-loaded fantasy profile. This system gives interesting upside to all involved, though banking on weekly production might be a bit premature.
Should I Draft Tyler Shough in Fantasy Football?
Shough flashed significant upside as a rookie last year, logging four top-12 weekly fantasy finishes. Down the stretch, he became a highly reliable asset, posting either 30+ rushing yards or multiple passing touchdowns in five straight games to close out the season. His arm talent also translated well to the professional level, as he ranked 11th in deep passer rating last year.
Initially, the front office’s decision to draft wide receiver Jordyn Tyson had me thinking there was legitimate low-end QB1 appeal in Shough for this upcoming season. But with a hamstring injury grabbing at the rookie during training camp, I worry about the immediate ceiling of this passing attack.

On the positive side, the Saints are expected to play at an elite pace in this Kellen Moore scheme, and that’s good news for overall offensive volume,as is playing in a controlled environment.
Given the current state of his receiving corps while Tyson recovers, I don’t think Shough is a top-15 fantasy QB in the first half of the season. But if Tyson is managed correctly and the rookie can offer legit WR2 production after Halloween, I could see another late-season finish from Shough that matters for fantasy purposes.
I’m not drafting him right now, but if I pay down at QB, I will certainly be adding Shough when we get an ounce of optimism around Tyson. He showed us enough as a rookie, and I have enough respect for this overall system that I can acknowledge there is top-12 upside in this profile, even if I think he’s a long shot to give us anything close to that prior to Halloween.
