Tyjae Spears is now eligible to return from IR. When should fantasy managers expect the Titans RB to return from his ankle injury?

Updates on Tyjae Spears have been nonexistent over the first month of the 2025 NFL season. The Tennessee Titans’ RB2 has been sidelined since suffering a high ankle sprain in the preseason and is currently on IR. Tyjae Spears Injury Update

Spears was placed on injured reserve on August 26 and is mandated to miss at least the first four games of the regular season. The injury happened on August 9 during Tennessee’s 29-7 preseason defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he caught a pass out of the backfield for a 13-yard gain just before halftime.

The medical evaluation confirmed a high ankle sprain, which generally demands 4-6 weeks of recovery time. However, NFL players frequently return ahead of the standard timeline, with research indicating an average return-to-play duration of 15 days despite the commonly referenced longer healing period.

Spears is now eligible to return and could, in theory, be activated as soon as this week. This Sunday represents roughly eight weeks since Spears went down with an injury that typically sidelines players for only 4-6 weeks. If Spears is designated to return, he would be able to practice with the team and could potentially play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.

There’s always concern about players not being 100% when returning from injury or returning too soon. This extended duration from injury to potential return date works favorably for Spears’ prospects of being completely healthy upon his comeback.

On Monday, we got our first update on Spears since he was placed on IR. Ian Rapaport reported that the Titans are expected to open Spears’ three-week window for activation before they begin practicing for this Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

It’s important to note that Spears has now been off the field for two months. There is no guarantee he is able to ramp up quickly. However, history shows that players often return either the same week they are designated to return or the week after. Fantasy managers should expect Spears on the field no later than Week 6.

Wednesday Update: The Titans did, in fact, open Spears’ three week window to return. He will practice with the team and coaches will gauge his progress throughout the week. It is within the realm of possibilities that Spears is activated ahead of this week’s game against the Cardinals. That would have to occur no later than Saturday afternoon, giving fantasy managers ample time to decide whether to put Spears in lineups.

Spears’ Fantasy Outlook

Head coach Brian Callahan had intended to establish a more balanced rushing approach this season, incorporating both Spears and Tony Pollard. However, Pollard’s usage through three games has been considerable, handling the majority of carries while Spears remains sidelined.

Given Pollard’s underwhelming performance to begin the season, Spears could return to a more prominent role than he’s previously held with Pollard available. Pollard has struggled to find consistent efficiency, failing to demonstrate the explosive ability many anticipated from the former Cowboys runner.

Fantasy managers witnessed Spears’ ceiling in Week 17 of last season when he managed a feature workload. With Tony Pollard unavailable due to an ankle injury and illness, Spears assumed the primary role, produced over 20 fantasy points in Week 16, and handled 24 opportunities in Week 17.

That Week 17 showing illustrated Spears’ ability to manage substantial volume when provided the chance. He carried double-digit attempts for the third time all season but maximized the expanded opportunity, demonstrating he could function as more than just a complementary back.

Spears has routinely excelled on a per-touch basis throughout his career, averaging 2.2 yards after contact per attempt with impressive tackle-breaking statistics. He also ranked 17th among 59 qualified backs in yards per route run last season, showcasing genuine receiving abilities that could prove valuable in PPR formats.

The possibility for a more equitable backfield distribution upon his return makes Spears a fascinating stash option. With rookie quarterback Cam Ward directing the offense, the Titans’ attack may operate more efficiently and create additional scoring chances than in previous campaigns.

The probability is high that someone in most fantasy leagues already has Spears stashed on IR. Now is the time to stash him if he’s available in free agency, as it’s an excellent opportunity to add him to rosters before information about his return begins circulating. His combination of demonstrated production when healthy, a favorable timeline for return, and potential for an enhanced role makes him an appealing option for managers to add to their teams.
