The status of Tyjae Spears remains largely unknown. The Tennessee Titans’ RB2 has been sidelined since suffering a high ankle sprain in the preseason and is currently on IR. For fantasy football managers who stashed him, what do we know about Spears’ impending return? What is the latest on the running back’s status?
What is Tyjae Spears Injury Update?
Spears was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 26 and will miss at least the first four games of the regular season. The injury occurred on Aug. 9 during Tennessee’s 29-7 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when he caught a pass out of the backfield for a 13-yard gain just before halftime.
The diagnosis revealed a high ankle sprain, which typically requires 4-6 weeks of recovery time. However, NFL players often return sooner than the standard timeline, with studies showing an average return-to-play time of 15 days despite the commonly cited more extended recovery period.
Given that Spears suffered the injury on Aug. 9, approximately 8-9 weeks will have elapsed by the time he’s first eligible to return in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 5. This extended timeline from injury to potential return date works in his favor for being fully healthy upon his comeback.
Since Spears went on IR, the organization has been silent about his progress. No updates about his recovery have been provided, leaving fantasy managers guessing about his status. Is this good or bad news? The answer depends on perspective.
He can’t return until Week 5, so the team has no compelling reason to provide updates.
The Titans are not obligated to discuss his progress until they decide to activate him from IR. More importantly, the lack of updates means there haven’t been any adverse developments or setbacks reported.
It’s certainly more optimistic to expect Spears to return in Week 5 Â when first eligible, but the timeline suggests it may be possible. By that point, he’ll have had nearly 10 weeks to recover from an injury that typically requires 4-6 weeks of healing.
Spears’ Fantasy Outlook
Head coach Brian Callahan had wanted to implement a more balanced rushing attack this season, featuring both Spears and Tony Pollard. However, Pollard’s workload through two games has been substantial, carrying the ball 36 times for 154 yards in Weeks 1 and 2.
Given Pollard’s unexceptional performance to open the season, Spears could return to a larger role than he’s typically had with Pollard active. Pollard has managed just 4.3 yards per carry through two games, failing to establish the dominance many expected from the former Cowboys back.
Fantasy managers saw Spears’ potential in Week 17 of last season when he handled a feature workload. With Tony Pollard sidelined by an ankle injury and illness, Spears stepped into the lead role, delivered over 20 fantasy points in Week 16, and handled 24 opportunities in Week 17.
That Week 17 performance demonstrated Spears’ capability of handling significant volume when given the opportunity. He handled double-digit carries for the third time all season but made the most of the expanded role, proving he could be more than just a change-of-pace back.
Spears has consistently impressed on a per-touch basis throughout his career, averaging 2.2 yards after contact per attempt with strong tackle-breaking metrics. He also finished 17th among 59 qualified backs in yards per route run last season, displaying legitimate receiving skills that could be valuable in PPR formats.

The potential for a more balanced backfield approach upon his return makes Spears an intriguing stash candidate. With rookie quarterback Cam Ward under center, the Titans’ offense may be more efficient and provide more scoring opportunities than in previous seasons.
Odds are someone in most fantasy leagues already has Spears stashed on IR. But if he’s available in free agency, it’s a great time to add him to the bench before news about his return starts surfacing. His combination of proven production when healthy, a favorable timeline for return, and potential for an expanded role makes him a compelling option for managers to add to rosters.
