The Houston Texans have been without one of their most promising receivers since suffering a catastrophic injury late last season. Tank Dell went down with a devastating knee injury that shocked the NFL world and has kept him sidelined through the entire offseason. For fantasy football wondering about his potential return, when might that happen?

Tank Dell Injury Update
Dell suffered a devastating leg injury during the Texans’ Week 16 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in December 2024, colliding with teammate Jared Wayne after securing a 30-yard touchdown.
The result was a dislocated kneecap and torn ACL, MCL, and LCL. It wasn’t just a single ligament tear that could heal in the typical timeframe. Dell’s injury involved nearly every major structure in the knee, making it one of the most severe cases in recent memory.
Dell reportedly underwent multiple surgeries, including a confirmed ACL repair in March 2025, following earlier procedures on his knee in January. Head coach DeMeco Ryans described Dell as being “in great spirits” during his spring rehabilitation and noted his “steady and impressive progress” back in May, but emphasized the team would not rush his return. Dell on the reserve/PUP list since August 26.
The team has not provided a single meaningful update all season regarding Dell’s status. As of mid-November, Dell has not been activated or even cleared to practice, with reports indicating there is “no clear timetable” for his return. Multiple sources have assessed that Dell will “almost certainly” not play this season.
According to SportsMedAnalytics, multi-ligament injuries of this nature typically require a minimum of 10 to 12 months for basic recovery and 14 to 16 months for high-level football readiness, especially for players whose game is built on burst and change of direction.
Since Dell has not yet been designated to return from the PUP list or had his practice window opened, he appears to be a long way from meeting the team’s medical thresholds for activation.
There is absolutely no indication that Dell will be activated this season. The Texans’ internal guidance has stressed patience and focused on full recovery for long-term health rather than pushing for any kind of return in 2025.
Perhaps there is an outside chance Dell could return for a postseason run if Houston manages to secure a playoff berth, but there is no chance he will be contributing anything for fantasy purposes during the regular season.
Dell’s Fantasy Outlook
Dell’s injury was legitimately career-threatening. Multi-ligament knee injuries have historically ended careers or significantly diminished players’ effectiveness upon return. It would be a massive win if Dell can play football in 2026, let alone matter for fantasy purposes.
The harsh reality is that there’s a better chance Dell never plays again, or is never the same again, than he provides any meaningful contribution this season.
In an absolute best-case scenario, Dell might be able to suit up for the final week or two of the regular season or possibly contribute during a playoff run.

There is no conceivable situation in which fantasy managers would feel comfortable putting Dell in their lineups during the fantasy playoffs. The combination of his extended absence, the severity of his injury, and the limited potential role makes him completely irrelevant for 2025 fantasy purposes.
With Dell sidelined for the entire year, the Texans have restructured their receiving corps around other options. Nico Collins, who earned Pro Bowl honors in 2024, is locked in as Houston’s top wide receiver. Christian Kirk has battled health issues of his own and been mostly a non-factor this season.
Rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel have flashed upside, but the coaching staff seems very reluctant to give them meaningful playing time.
Dell is undoubtedly a talented player who showed tremendous promise before his injury. The third-round pick in 2023 compiled 51 receptions for 667 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 before going down in Week 16. During his college career at Houston, he posted 90 receptions for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2021, then followed that up with 109 catches for 1,398 yards and 17 touchdowns in just 13 games during his 2022 season. Hopefully, he can fully recover and return to form for the 2026 season.
