Should You Start Carolina Panthers RBs Rico Dowdle or Chuba Hubbard in Fantasy Football Week 16?

The Panthers' backfield continues to twist and turn weekly. Can fantasy managers trust either or both of Rico Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard in Week 16?

Rico Dowdle reclaimed his workhorse role in Week 15 against the Saints. Chuba Hubbard saw his workload reduced after his best game of the season the week prior. Which Panthers running back deserves fantasy football trust for a critical Week 16 divisional matchup against Tampa Bay?

Rico Dowdle’s Fantasy Outlook

Dowdle went back to being the workhorse last week. He logged 16 carries and one target while playing 59% of the snaps. The volume was similar to the week before, but the snap share and disparity in opportunities between him and Hubbard increased, reinforcing Dowdle as the clear lead back.

The Panthers did lose the game, but Dowdle was not the problem. He turned his 16 carries into useful yardage and handled the primary early-down work, functioning as the engine of the rushing attack. Coaches often react to losses by tweaking usage, but nothing about Dowdle’s performance suggested a need to scale back his role.

Dowdle is no longer the elite RB1 he was from Weeks 5-9 when he was putting up massive weekly scores, yet he still projects as a solid fantasy starter. His combination of snap share, early-down volume, and goal-line involvement gives him a reliable touch floor. In an offense that wants to run as much as Carolina does, that profile keeps him squarely in the RB2 conversation.

Dowdle’s path to production remains straightforward. As long as he continues to dominate the rushing attempts and hold the edge in high-value touches near the goal line, he will project as the preferred fantasy option in this backfield. Even if his efficiency fluctuates, the workload alone is enough to justify starting him in most formats.

Chuba Hubbard’s Fantasy Outlook

Hubbard entered last week riding the momentum of his best game of the season. Instead of building on that breakout, his workload was reduced. His snap share dropped from 59% down to 42%, and he finished with eight carries and one target, a significant step back from the 19 opportunities he saw in his spike week.

Rather than rotating drives with Dowdle like in previous games, Hubbard was used mostly on obvious passing downs and in a change-of-pace role. That shift in usage confirms that the coaching staff still views Dowdle as the primary back. Hubbard returned to the complementary status that had made him difficult to start earlier in the year.

The reduced workload makes Hubbard much more difficult to trust. His role no longer supports a reliable touch floor, especially if Carolina controls the game and leans on Dowdle for clock-killing carries. Even in a matchup that may favor receiving backs, Hubbard needs more snaps and routes to turn that structural edge into consistent fantasy value.

For now, Hubbard looks like what his usage says he is: a secondary back who needs either a shift in game plan, unexpected negative script, or a big play to matter for fantasy. Without those variables breaking his way, his weekly projection fits more as a desperation option than a player you want to rely on in a playoff matchup.

Should You Start Dowdle or Hubbard This Week?

The matchup this week is a tricky one. The Bucs have been a pass funnel all season, but they are not dominant against the run and allow the 11th-most schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to running backs. Carolina should be able to find some success on the ground if they stay committed to their identity.

One interesting wrinkle is how vulnerable Tampa Bay has been to running backs in the passing game. A massive 21.2% of their total receiving yards allowed has gone to the position, the highest rate in the league by a sizable margin. On paper, that tendency would favor Hubbard, who is more involved on passing downs than Dowdle.

The Panthers are at home as narrow underdogs, and the projected game script is unlikely to get away from them. Carolina has the second highest neutral game script run rate in the league at 51% and clearly prefers to keep the ball on the ground whenever possible. That philosophy points to continued strong volume for Dowdle as long as the game remains close.

After what we saw last week, it is hard to trust Hubbard. Yet, I can’t shake the feeling that we are going to see much more of him this week. But that feeling is not supported by any actual usage trend from the most recent game. The data says Dowdle is an RB2 you should feel comfortable starting, while Hubbard is best viewed as a desperation flex play rather than a recommended option.
