With Amon-Ra St. Brown unlikely to play, should fantasy managers start Detroit Lions WR Isaac TeSlaa on Thursday night against the Cowboys?

Isaac TeSlaa’s Fantasy Outlook

TeSlaa caught both of his targets for 35 yards and a touchdown on Thanksgiving against Green Bay. He hauled in a 17-yard scoring strike from Jared Goff in the third quarter for his third touchdown of the season on just six receptions. The production created buzz around his potential as a waiver wire pickup, but the underlying usage reveals a far different reality.

The rookie receiver had essentially disappeared from the game plan prior to last week. TeSlaa caught just one of four targets for 11 yards over the previous seven games. He has been targeted only 11 times total this season across eight games. That minimal involvement persists despite repeated opportunities for the coaching staff to feature him more prominently.

St. Brown exited in the first quarter on Thanksgiving with his ankle injury, creating immediate openings for expanded targets. TeSlaa still couldn’t earn meaningful volume despite playing alongside Jameson Williams as the next option. He ran just one fewer route than Williams but saw only two targets compared to Tom Kennedy’s four.

The coaching staff demonstrated no inclination to force-feed TeSlaa even when circumstances demanded additional passing-game contributors.

Every time Detroit has suggested wanting to get TeSlaa more involved, they haven’t followed through. If the team genuinely believed in him as a significant offensive weapon, he would have accumulated more than 11 targets through eight games.

TeSlaa does appear to have a nose for the end zone when opportunities materialize. His three touchdowns on six catches represents elite efficiency, though the microscopic sample size makes projection impossible. He could conceivably catch a touchdown against Dallas given the favorable matchup, but banking on that outcome requires ignoring all available usage data.

Should You Start TeSlaa This Week?

Dallas presents the most favorable defensive matchup possible for opposing wide receivers. The Cowboys allow the most schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to the position, ranking dead last in the NFL. They’ve surrendered massive production to receivers all season, creating ideal conditions for Detroit’s passing attack.

The game environment projects as a high-scoring affair. Both teams enter on full rest after playing last Thursday, eliminating any short-week concerns. The total opened at 54.5 points with Detroit favored by three points, suggesting an offensive shootout. These conditions typically produce elevated passing volume across both teams.

Detroit has historically responded well following losses. The Lions have not lost consecutive games all season, consistently bouncing back with dominant performances. They average 38.5 points following defeats, demonstrating their ability to refocus and execute at a high level. This pattern bodes well for overall offensive output Thursday night.

Yet, fantasy managers should not start TeSlaa despite the enticing matchup. The evidence overwhelmingly suggests Detroit doesn’t view him as a featured part of their offense even with St. Brown sidelined.

Williams operates as the clear WR1 with Tom Kennedy and TeSlaa rotating as complementary options. TeSlaa might catch a touchdown given his red-zone efficiency, but there’s no tangible support for projecting meaningful target volume.

His preseason hype hasn’t translated to regular-season opportunity, and last week’s touchdown represents an outlier rather than a trend. Leave him on benches in all formats unless desperate for a prayer at scoring.
