Arizona’s backfield entered yet another phase of chaos last week as usage patterns defied previous expectations. Bam Knight and Emari Demercado head into Week 10 following a surprising shift in workload distribution that creates uncertainty about future roles. Can fantasy footballmanagers trust either Cardinals runner this week?
Bam Knight Fantasy Outlook
Knight started last week as he has in each of the past three games, but immediately came out for Demercado on the second play from scrimmage. The former UDFA remained the lead back by snap count, playing 56% compared to Demercado’s 40%. However, his production failed to justify the playing time advantage.
Efficiency continues plaguing Knight’s fantasy value. He managed just 27 yards on nine attempts against Dallas, demonstrating his inability to generate consistent yardage. Knight is now averaging a dismal 3.4 yards per carry on the season, ranking among the league’s least productive qualified runners.

Surprisingly, Knight maintained involvement in the passing game despite Demercado traditionally serving as the pass-catching specialist. Knight ran 15 routes compared to Demercado’s seven and proved the more effective receiver when targeted. This development suggests Arizona may not have clearly defined roles for each back moving forward.
The one area where Knight retains value involves goal-line opportunities. If carries are available inside the five-yard line, they will almost certainly go to Knight based on season-long tendencies. Whether he converts against a Seattle defense that ranks slightly above average against running backs is a different concern.
Emari Demercado Fantasy Outlook
Last week marked a complete surprise in Demercado’s usage after minimal involvement throughout the season. He had accumulated just eight total carries on the season before being fed 14 rushes against Dallas. The massive spike in volume represented a dramatic shift from his established role as a passing-down specialist.
Demercado capitalized on his expanded opportunities with impressive efficiency. He rushed for 79 yards on his 14 attempts, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Given this performance, the Cardinals will likely provide him another chance to prove he deserves sustained lead-back usage.

The coaching staff appears ready to ride the hot hand rather than commit to predetermined workload splits. Demercado clearly outperformed Knight last week, which should translate to increased touches if Arizona continues this performance-based approach. Demercado was clearly the best back for the Cardinals on Monday Night Football, both running ahead of Knight and showing superior efficiency.
Should You Start Knight or Demercado This Week?
The problem with this backfield from a fantasy perspective is the complete absence of rhyme or reason behind each back’s usage. Knight and Demercado rotated in and out seemingly at random with no clearly defined roles beyond Knight’s status as the goal-line back. This unpredictability makes projecting weekly outcomes nearly impossible for fantasy managers.
Seattle presents a challenging defensive matchup for both running backs. The Seahawks rank among the league’s better defenses, sitting top five in rushing yards, touchdowns, yards before and after contact, and explosive runs allowed to running backs. Their one vulnerability lies in defending pass-catching backs, though that doesn’t provide much comfort given Arizona’s inconsistent approach.
The Cardinals enter as 6.5-point road underdogs in a matchup they’ve struggled with historically. Arizona has won just once in Seattle since 2020, and the Seahawks have dominated this series for three consecutive seasons. Negative game script could force the Cardinals away from the ground game entirely.
The challenging bye week schedule presented by Week 10 includes four teams with several fantasy-relevant players off, potentially forcing managers to deploy a Cardinals back out of necessity. Just know that the floor approaches zero while the upside remains minimal for both options.
Knight will almost certainly see more snaps, but the touch count could vary wildly based on performance. Fantasy managers should seek alternatives unless facing desperate roster constraints from byes or injuries.
