Ricky Pearsall Start/Sit: Latest Injury Update, Fantasy Outlook, and More

Starting the season as one of the 49ers' leading pass catchers, Ricky Pearsall has recently suffered a knee injury. Will he return this week?

San Francisco 49ers second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall has emerged as a crucial fantasy football asset this season, but his Week 6 status remains uncertain following a concerning injury development. The promising wideout leads all 49ers receivers through the first month of the season, establishing himself as QB Brock Purdy’s primary deep threat.

However, Pearsall’s availability for this week’s matchup against Tampa Bay is now in serious question after he was forced to miss last Thursday’s game against the Rams due to what he described as feeling “instability” in his knee.

With the 49ers’ receiving corps already dealing with multiple injury concerns, Pearsall’s potential absence could significantly impact both San Francisco’s offensive capabilities and fantasy lineups across the league.

Ricky Pearsall Injury Update

Second-year San Francisco 49ers receiver Ricky Pearsall missed Week 5 due to a minor PCL injury, which wasn’t helped by a short turnaround before the team’s Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Rams last week.

Time will tell if the extended rest gives him a chance to heal enough to play in Week 6’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. So far, with many of the 49ers’ pass catchers nursing injuries, Pearsall has been one of the team’s best receiving options.

This season, he has hauled in 20 of 29 targets for 327 yards, which leads San Francisco receivers — running back Christian McCaffrey leads the team with 387 receiving yards on 39 catches.

Pearsall Fantasy Outlook

A knee injury resulted in Pearsall missing Thursday night’s game last week, something that wasn’t much of a surprise after he mentioned feeling “instability” coming out of Week 4. I was never a high-level athlete, but I’ve been covering it for a while, and hearing someone self-describe an injury like that isn’t common.

I’m hopeful that we see Pearsall return this week, but with him being this offense’s primary deep threat (15.9-yard aDOT compared to Jauan Jennings’ 9.8), I’m going to be a week late rather than a week early in inserting him into my lineup.

Those downfield routes require a connection with his quarterback (which requires said QB to be healthy) and the ability to adjust on the fly to track the ball. Peasall can access both of those things with time, but I need assurance on the health side for a full week at a minimum before being tempted to roll the dice here.
