The San Francisco 49ers secured a crucial victory over the Tennessee Titans in Week 15, keeping their playoff chances strong in the competitive NFC West. Ricky Pearsall posted his best performance since returning from injury, but he dealt with multiple health issues during the contest. Will fantasy football managers have the sophomore wide receiver available this week?
Ricky Pearsall Injury Update
Pearsall suffered his initial PCL injury during the 49ers’ Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The wide receiver landed hard on the ground while attempting to make a reception, and what was initially expected to be a minor injury turned into a six-game absence.
Pearsall finally returned to action in Week 11 against Arizona after missing six consecutive games. However, his first three games back were underwhelming. Through those three contests following his return, Pearsall managed just five receptions for 20 yards total.
That changed dramatically in Week 15 against Tennessee. Pearsall caught six of seven targets for 96 yards, marking the first time he truly looked like himself since the injury. This represented his most productive performance since September when he secured eight catches for 117 yards against Arizona.
The breakout performance came with a physical cost, as Pearsall is now dealing with both ankle and knee injuries. The ankle injury occurred early in the game on the 49ers’ first offensive play from scrimmage. Pearsall hurt his ankle when it got twisted during an eight-yard reception to open the contest.
He left the field with a limp and was evaluated in the medical tent. The ankle issue was very minor, and Pearsall returned to play through it for the entire game. The wide receiver continued making plays despite the early setback.
The knee issue arose late in the contest and represents a more significant concern. Shanahan said after the game that the knee injury was most likely Pearsall irritating his PCL from the past.
Pearsall did not return after aggravating the previous PCL injury late in the game. Fortunately, Shanahan provided measured optimism about his status following the victory. The head coach stated he expects the sophomore wide receiver “to be alright,” but added that those injuries linger and the team will know more after evaluating him.
Shanahan acknowledged that Pearsall was battling through a lot during the game. Pearsall himself said it is probably the same issue he was dealing with before, which is disappointing, but at least he knows how to manage it now. He added that he needs to get imaging done to determine the exact problem.
The situation carries added uncertainty given the recent history. When Pearsall first hurt his knee in Week 4, Shanahan said there was a chance the receiver would play the following week, but Pearsall wound up missing six games. Fantasy managers should expect Pearsall to miss Week 16 and likely the remainder of the regular season.
Pearsall’s Fantasy Outlook
The 49ers find themselves in a drastically different situation than when Pearsall initially suffered his PCL injury. San Francisco still needs to win games to make the playoffs. In the ultra-competitive NFC West, they are still very much not locked into a playoff spot.
The team no longer has the luxury of being overly cautious with injured players. If Shanahan’s words prove accurate, Pearsall is back to being a viable WR3 option in fantasy lineups based on his recent performance. His Week 15 performance demonstrated he has finally regained the form that made him valuable through the first four games of the season.

If Pearsall cannot play, it would result in more looks funneled in the directions of George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, and Christian McCaffrey. Kittle was targeted nine times against Tennessee, the only 49ers player with more targets than Pearsall. Jennings has established himself as a reliable weapon when healthy.
Fantasy managers rostering Pearsall should monitor his practice participation closely throughout the week. The 49ers will provide updates on his status as the week progresses, and his ability to practice will offer the clearest indication of his availability for Sunday’s road matchup against Indianapolis.
Given the team’s playoff aspirations and Pearsall’s breakthrough performance, there is legitimate reason to believe he will push to play. But it is likely his body won’t let him.
