The NFL season is in full swing. As happens every year, injuries are rearing their ugly heads. As fantasy football managers prepare to set Week 8 lineups, it’s important to stay informed on the latest injury news. Mason Taylor missed some practice time this week due to injury. What is his current status and outlook for this week?
Mason Taylor Injury Update
Taylor’s week took an unexpected turn when he appeared on Thursday’s injury report as a non-participant with a quad injury after being absent from the list entirely on Wednesday.
Mid-week appearances on the injury report often raise red flags, especially when a player goes from full participation one day to not practicing the next. The exact timing of the injury remains unclear, though reports suggest it likely occurred sometime during Wednesday’s session.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the injury is not considered serious, and the Jets have not ruled Taylor out for Week 8. ESPN’s Rich Cimini similarly reported that Taylor was “presumably injured” in practice but indicated there’s still optimism he could suit up Sunday.
That optimism grew stronger on Friday when Taylor returned to practice in a limited capacity, marking a positive development after his Thursday absence. He’s officially listed as questionable, but given the quick return to at least partial participation, Taylor appears to be trending in the right direction for Sunday’s 1:00 PM ET kickoff against the Bengals.
Jets beat writer Brian Costello also noted that head coach Aaron Glenn “sounded optimistic about Mason Taylor (quad) for Sunday,” calling Friday’s limited session “a great sign” for the rookie’s availability.
The timing of the Jets’ early kickoff is also important for fantasy managers, as Taylor’s official status will be known before lineups lock. The fact that Taylor practiced on Friday makes him far more likely to suit up than players who fail to practice at all leading into a game, leaving reason for cautious optimism heading into the weekend.
On Saturday night, Adam Schefter reported that Taylor is expected to play.
Taylor’s Fantasy Outlook
Taylor has successfully taken over the TE1 role for the Jets after a gradual progression through the early part of the season. The rookie has registered over a 90% snap share in consecutive games, establishing himself as a reliable target in New York’s struggling offense.
Despite the increased opportunity, Taylor’s production has been disappointing with just 24 receptions for 208 yards and zero touchdowns through seven games. Much of this lack of production can be attributed to Justin Fields’ poor quarterback play, which has limited the effectiveness of the entire Jets passing attack.

The inevitable move to Tyrod Taylor at quarterback should help restore some fantasy value to Mason’s role. Although, Glenn is playing coy and refuses to name a starter. The expectation is it will be Tyrod if he is healthy enough to play.
The veteran quarterback’s presence and more consistent accuracy could create better opportunities for the rookie tight end to produce meaningful fantasy numbers.
If Taylor cannot play against Cincinnati, Jeremy Ruckert would be positioned to serve as the primary tight end. However, Ruckert would not be on the fantasy radar given his limited target history and the Jets’ overall offensive struggles throughout the season.
Fantasy managers desperately need Taylor to be available during a week when rosters are ravaged by bye weeks and injuries across the league. His potential absence would create another hole in lineups that are already dealing with limited options at multiple positions.
The matchup against Cincinnati presents an excellent opportunity for Taylor if he can suit up. The Bengals defense allows the most schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to tight ends, having surrendered 536 yards and nine touchdowns to the position this season. This vulnerability makes Taylor an attractive streaming option if he’s cleared to play.
