The New York Jets prepare for another challenging matchup as they look to end their winless streak. Mason Taylor popped up on Thursday’s practice report with an unexpected injury. Will fantasy football managers have their rookie tight end available for Week 8?
Mason Taylor Injury Update
Taylor was not listed on Wednesday’s practice report but suddenly appeared as a non-participant on Thursday with a quad injury. Mid-week downgrades like this are never encouraging signs, particularly when a player goes from full participation to complete absence without warning.
The timing of Taylor’s injury remains unclear, as he went from what appeared to be a full practice session Wednesday to not practicing at all Thursday. If the injury had occurred during Wednesday’s practice, he likely would have been listed as limited. It’s a strange situation.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini speculated that Taylor was presumably injured during Wednesday’s practice session, though the exact circumstances remain unknown. The sudden nature of his appearance on the injury report creates uncertainty about both the severity and timing of the quad issue.
According to Ian Rapoport, the injury is not considered serious and Taylor has not been ruled out for Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals. This provides some optimism that the quad issue may be manageable rather than a significant strain that would require extended recovery time.
Friday’s practice participation level will be crucial in determining Taylor’s availability for Sunday’s contest. A limited practice session would put him on track to play and suggest the injury is minor enough to manage through game day. However, a second consecutive DNP would indicate he will likely miss the game against the Bengals.
Taylor’s Fantasy Outlook
Taylor has successfully taken over the TE1 role for the Jets after a gradual progression through the early part of the season. The rookie has registered over a 90% snap share in consecutive games, establishing himself as a reliable target in New York’s struggling offense.
Despite the increased opportunity, Taylor’s production has been disappointing with just 24 receptions for 208 yards and zero touchdowns through seven games. Much of this lack of production can be attributed to Justin Fields’ poor quarterback play, which has limited the effectiveness of the entire Jets passing attack.

The inevitable move to Tyrod Taylor at quarterback should help restore some fantasy value to Mason’s role. The veteran quarterback’s presence and more consistent accuracy could create better opportunities for the rookie tight end to produce meaningful fantasy numbers.
If Taylor cannot play against Cincinnati, Jeremy Ruckert would be positioned to serve as the primary tight end. However, Ruckert would not be on the fantasy radar given his limited target history and the Jets’ overall offensive struggles throughout the season.
Fantasy managers desperately need Taylor to be available during a week when rosters are ravaged by bye weeks and injuries across the league. His potential absence would create another hole in lineups that are already dealing with limited options at multiple positions.
The matchup against Cincinnati presents an excellent opportunity for Taylor if he can suit up. The Bengals defense allows the most schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game to tight ends, having surrendered 536 yards and nine touchdowns to the position this season. This vulnerability makes Taylor an attractive streaming option if he’s cleared to play.
