Keaton Mitchell’s NFL career feels like it hasn’t really started, yet. He’s dealt with so many injuries during his short time in the league that his true potential still feels like an unknown.
With a chance at the satellite back role in what should be a very prolific Los Angeles Chargers offense, is Mitchell the ideal RB2 for fantasy football managers to throw a late-round dart at?
Should You Draft Keaton Mitchell in Fantasy Football?
Somehow, Mitchell is entering his fourth NFL season. It certainly doesn’t feel like he’s been around that long, considering he’s only touched the ball 140 times across three seasons, but he’s a veteran now. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to stay on the field, with injuries limiting him to just 26 of a possible 51 games played.
The first real glimpse of Mitchell’s potential came in his rookie year. In his first-ever game with a carry, he totaled 134 yards from scrimmage and scored his first touchdown. The excitement was short-lived, though, as Mitchell tore his ACL six weeks later.

Mitchell’s sophomore season was a complete wash. He didn’t return until Week 10 and lasted just three weeks before reinjuring himself. Mitchell finished his second NFL season with 16 total touches.
In 2025, Mitchell played in 13 games. He never saw any meaningful volume, but he did average an impressive 6.3 yards per carry on his 59 attempts. It was enough to compel Jim Harbaugh to sign his brother’s former running back to a not insignificant two-year deal with $5 million guaranteed. The path is there for Mitchell to carve out a meaningful role in 2026.
Mitchell’s Redraft Fantasy Football Value
By all accounts, Mitchell is set to serve as the RB2 behind Omarion Hampton. Mike McDaniel has a history of throwing to his running backs, and Mitchell’s 4.37 speed makes him uniquely suited for that role.
In terms of skill set and athleticism, Mitchell sure looks like the perfect complement to Hampton. If he can play 30% of the snaps and see 6-8 opportunities a week, there’s some RB4/Flex value potential. But, for as talented as Mitchell may be, the excitement around him may be too high.

At 179 pounds with his injury history, there isn’t really any injury-contingent upside. Even if Hampton were to miss time, Mitchell is never going to be a 15-touch-per-game back. Maybe he sees a couple more chances each game, but he’s probably capped at 10-12 opportunities even in a best-case scenario.
That makes Mitchell an unwise investment at his RB52 price tag. Even though that price isn’t exactly expensive, we want to take players with plausible upside. Several players going after him have a path to volume if things break right. I just don’t see it for Mitchell.

Plus, we have to address the elephant in the room that is Kimani Vidal. He played very well, filling in for an injured Hampton. It seems unlikely he is just going to go away and not be part of the offense at all, especially if Hampton gets hurt again. My guess is Vidal would be the starter if Hampton missed time, with Mitchell’s role not really changing.
I have Mitchell at RB53, slightly below his ADP. As much as I like the player, he’s a much better real-life asset and best ball option than he is a managed like target in fantasy drafts.
