Josh Allen has been the gold standard at quarterback in fantasy football for the better part of a decade. There is no debate about who the best option at the position is. The debate is whether you should actually pay what it costs to get him. Fantasy managers face a real opportunity-cost decision with Allen in 2026.
Should You Draft Josh Allen in Fantasy Football?
Allen is currently being projected as the QB1 in PFN’s Free Fantasy Mock Draft Simulator. His ADP is 23.8. PFN’s fantasy football experts Jason Katz and Kyle Soppe also have very high hopes for Allen. They have him as the 37th overall player, so that’s lower than the ADP, but he’s still QB1 in their rankings.
With Allen, you look at his ability to stay healthy, his phenomenal accuracy, his arm strength, and his ability to move the ball down the field, but also what he can do as a rusher. Especially last year, with Lamar Jackson not running the ball as often, you could argue that Allen’s the most effective scrambling quarterback in the NFL today.
That’s not even considering the rushing-touchdown element of what Allen brings to the table. Looking at what he’s been able to do the last couple of seasons, he had 14 rushing touchdowns in 2025, 12 rushing touchdowns in 2024, and 15 rushing touchdowns in 2023. That’s not even including the fact that he’s consistent.
He’s had over 3,000 passing yards every year except his rookie year since entering the NFL. He’s shown that he can reach that 4,000 mark, too. He hit 4,000 yards or more every single year from 2020 to 2023. He hasn’t done it the last two years, but he’s still a touchdown machine, pretty consistent as far as yardage goes, and the rushing element is out of this world.
Allen’s absolutely a guy that I’m taking in fantasy football at his current ADP. I know it’s typically smart to wait on a quarterback, but I think if you have the chance at a true difference-maker at quarterback, it’s worth taking. Allen, I think, fits that category.
If you have the chance to take Allen around that 23.8 ADP range, he’s absolutely somebody I’d consider bucking the trend and taking a quarterback early in your fantasy football drafts this year.

Josh Allen’s Week 1 Fantasy Outlook

We waste no time in getting the unstoppable force and the immovable object.
I hate betting against either of these entities, but something has to give in Houston this week, and we saw the defense very much get the better of this matchup a season ago.

- 8 sacks
- 20 rushing yards
That’s not the version of Allen you drafted and, by and large, it’s not the version we see from him (over the past six seasons, he’s scored 15+ fantasy points at a higher rate than Michael Jordan made free throws during his career).
By no means am I saying he busts this week, and maybe there is a world in which he’s a contrarian DFS play, but I am lowering my expectations. The DJ Moore dynamic could take some getting used to, and it’s not as if either of these teams pushes tempo (Houston ranked 20th in pace in 2025, Buffalo 32nd).
Joe Burrow in a potential shootout against the Bucs? Lamar Jackson on a fast track in Indy? Jared Goff at home, Caleb Williams against the Panthers, and Justin Herbert facing the Cards?
Allen might not be a top-5 performer at the position to open the season.
If there is a week for Allen to be neutralized, this is it. It’s never a fun experience to see him atop your opponent’s roster, but I do think this is your best chance this season at seeing Clark Kent, not Superman.
If you roster him, don’t sweat it. He is as capable as anyone of making chicken salad out of this matchup, and even if he can’t, barring an injury, I’m not going to even entertain the idea of moving him off of my QB1 ranking for the remainder of the season.
You drafted the lone signal caller in my top tier, and that’s not going to change in September.
