Joe Burrow Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Continue Holding the Bengals QB?

Joe Burrow remains sidelined by his turf toe injury. Should fantasy managers expect the Bengals QB to make it back this season?

The Cincinnati Bengals’ playoff hopes remain in jeopardy as their franchise quarterback continues his long road back from a devastating injury. Joe Burrow has now missed six weeks with a severe turf toe injury that required surgical intervention. With the Bengals’ playoff chances dwindling after Sunday’s loss to the New York Jets, will fantasy football managers ever see their investment pay off this season?

Joe Burrow Injury Update

Burrow’s injury occurred during the team’s Week 2 victory over Jacksonville when he was tackled awkwardly while trying to avoid a sack. The initial diagnosis revealed a Grade 3 turf toe injury with medical experts projecting a minimum three-month recovery timeline.

Dr. Norman Waldrop performed Burrow’s surgery at Birmingham’s Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. The severity of Burrow’s condition cannot be understated. Grade 3 turf toe involves complete tears of all soft tissues in the big toe, including ligaments and the joint capsule.

Six weeks into his recovery, there was encouraging news Sunday when Burrow appeared on the sideline without his walking boot for the first time since the injury. This represents meaningful progress and suggests he remains on schedule with the projected 12-week recovery timeline.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, turf toe occurs when the toe hyperextends while planted firmly on the ground. Medical experts have emphasized the complexity of recovery from this type of injury, with Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer noting that turf toe is “one of the hardest, most painful injuries to come back from” in professional football.

Three months from Burrow’s September surgery would put his earliest possible return in mid-December. However, multiple medical professionals have suggested even that timeline may be optimistic given the nature of his injury and the demands of playing quarterback. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Burrow could return for the final two or three games of the regular season.

The bigger concern for Burrow’s return is Cincinnati’s declining playoff chances. The Bengals fell to 3-5 after Sunday’s collapse against the Jets, dropping their playoff odds to just 15.8% according to PFSN projections.

Burrow Fantasy Outlook

The harsh reality for fantasy managers is that Burrow’s season is likely over for all practical purposes. Even in the most optimistic scenario where he returns in Week 16, the circumstances make him an unrealistic fantasy option for championship weeks.

The situation mirrors Aaron Rodgers’ attempted return from his torn Achilles in December of the 2023 season. Rodgers returned to practice but once the Jets were mathematically eliminated, any notion of his return was abandoned. The same logic applies to Burrow and the Bengals.

Cincinnati will not put their franchise quarterback at unnecessary risk if they’re not in playoff contention. Given the current timeline, a best-case scenario has Burrow returning in Week 16. That means, at most, fantasy managers could get two starts from him beginning in the fantasy semifinals.

If you’ve made it that far in your fantasy season, odds are you don’t have such a problem at quarterback that you need Burrow coming off a three-month layoff with no guarantee he makes it through the game. The mathematical reality shows that even if Burrow somehow returns in December, he would need extensive practice time to regain game readiness after major surgery.

Fantasy managers in competitive leagues should strongly consider dropping Burrow unless they have a free IR spot with no penalty for holding him. The waiver wire almost certainly offers more reliable weekly streaming options than waiting months for a player who may never see the field again this season.

By far, the most likely scenario is that fantasy managers see Burrow again in 2026, not 2025.
