The Carolina Panthers are getting healthier at key positions as they continue their recent surge. Jalen Coker has been working toward a return after missing the entire start of the season due to a quad injury. After appearing very close to activation last week, should fantasy football managers expect the promising receiver to make his debut in Week 7?

Jalen Coker Injury Update
Coker suffered his quadriceps strain during the final week of August, forcing the Panthers to place him on injured reserve just before the regular season began. The second-year receiver has now missed the first six games of the year while working his way back from what head coach Dave Canales described as a “pretty significant” muscle injury.
The Panthers opened Coker’s 21-day practice window on October 7, officially beginning his path back to game action. He participated fully throughout the week leading up to the Cowboys game, showing no limitations from the quad issue and earning praise from Canales, who noted he “looked fantastic” and appeared “quick and explosive” in practice.
Despite his strong practice performance, Carolina ultimately ruled Coker out for Week 6 as they decided he needed additional time within his 21-day practice period. The fact that he was initially listed as questionable before being the team declined to activate him on Saturday afternoon suggests the team exercised extra caution rather than rushing him back prematurely.
Following the Week 6 victory, Canales provided an encouraging update on Monday, stating that Coker is “really close” to returning. The coach indicated that Week 7 will be crucial for Coker to “really, physically prove that he can do it and handle the load that we’re expecting” from him.
Given that Coker appeared very close to being activated last week and has had additional time to build up his conditioning, the expectation is that he will make his season debut in Week 7 against the New York Jets. He practiced in full on Wednesday to open the week, which is a great sign. Canales said, “The plan is for Coker to play” this week.
Coker Fantasy Outlook
Coker’s potential return addresses a significant void in Carolina’s receiving corps, as the Panthers haven’t established a reliable WR2 option behind rookie Tetairoa McMillan this season. The sophomore UDFA receiver was positioned to serve as Carolina’s WR2 following the trade of Adam Thielen to Minnesota in late August.
His rookie season production provides optimism for fantasy relevance. In 11 games last season, Coker recorded 32 catches for 478 yards and two touchdowns on 46 targets, averaging 14.9 yards per catch with an impressive 69.6% catch rate. He started four games and finished third on the team in receiving yards despite his undrafted status.
While it may be risky to start Coker immediately in his first game back from such a lengthy absence, he could easily emerge as a startable option within a week or two as he regains his timing and conditioning. The Panthers’ passing attack has struggled with just eight touchdown passes through six games, creating opportunity for Coker to carve out a meaningful role.
Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should consider adding Coker now before his activation becomes official. His combination of slot versatility and big-play ability makes him an intriguing addition, particularly given Carolina’s lack of established options behind McMillan.
The Panthers currently have Hunter Renfrow occupying the slot role, but he has managed just 14 receptions for 83 yards this season despite two touchdowns. Coker’s return should significantly upgrade the position and provide more explosive potential for an offense that needs additional playmakers.
