The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with a significant blow to their backfield as they push toward another playoff run. Isiah Pacheco suffered a knee injury during Monday night’s game. How should fantasy football managers respond ahead of Week 9?
Isiah Pacheco Injury Update
Pacheco had been healthy throughout the entire 2025 season until taking a shot to the knee on a fourth-quarter carry during Monday night’s contest. He immediately limped off the field and was evaluated by team trainers on the sideline. While he was able to walk off the injury, he did not return to the game.
Tuesday brought concerning news when tests revealed Pacheco had suffered a sprained MCL. The team has labeled him as “week-to-week,” which typically indicates a multi-week absence rather than a day-to-day situation.
MCL sprains are generally classified as 4-6 week injuries depending on the severity of the damage. If Pacheco sustained a more mild Grade 1 sprain, there’s a chance he could return in approximately two weeks. However, moderate to severe sprains often require the full 4-6 week timeline for proper healing.
Although we can’t say anything with 100% certainty just yet, there is no chance Pacheco plays this week. Players designated as “week-to-week” do not avoid missing time altogether. The Chiefs also have their Week 10 bye, giving the team even more incentive to hold him out.
In the most optimistic scenario, Pacheco would miss Week 9, benefit from the Week 10 bye for additional rest, and potentially return in Week 11. However, given the typical recovery period for MCL injuries and the Chiefs’ cautious approach with key players, his absence will more likely extend beyond that initial timeline.
The Chiefs have shown they’re willing to be patient with injured players, especially considering their depth and championship aspirations. Rushing Pacheco back too early could risk a more serious setback that might compromise their postseason plans.
Pacheco’s Fantasy Outlook
With Pacheco sidelined, Kareem Hunt will step into the starting role and immediately becomes a priority pickup for fantasy managers. Hunt has proven capable of handling a featured workload. He filled in admirably for Pacheco last season during his recovery from a broken fibula and posted weekly RB2 numbers.
Hunt had been operating as the Chiefs’ primary passing-down and goal-line back before Pacheco’s injury. He will now transition to handling early-down duties while retaining his goal-line responsibilities, making him an attractive fantasy option given his already apparent touchdown puside.

Expect Brashard Smith to assume the passing-down role that Hunt previously occupied. Head coach Andy Reid has historically preferred using different backs for early downs versus passing situations, regardless of whether their skill sets are particularly suited for those specific roles. Reid simply wants fresh legs and different looks between the two roles.
Smith becomes a priority waiver wire addition for fantasy managers, even if Hunt remains healthy. He’s now just one injury away from potentially taking over a feature workload in a Patrick Mahomes-led offense, which carries tremendous upside potential.
Hunt’s previous experience in Kansas City’s system and his familiarity with Mahomes should allow for a smooth transition. His power running style complements the Chiefs’ offensive philosophy, and his proven ability to find the end zone makes him a reliable weekly starter while Pacheco recovers.
Fantasy managers should expect Hunt to handle 10+ carries per game along with goal-line work, while Smith likely sees 5-8 touches in passing situations. This backfield split should provide adequate production until Pacheco can return to full health.
