Fantasy football managers face uncertainty with Evan Engram’s status after the veteran tight end suffered a calf injury in his Denver Broncos debut. The 31-year-old recorded just three catches for 21 yards before exiting early in Week 1.
With minimal updates on his Week 2 availability and calf injuries being notoriously unpredictable, fantasy football owners should consider backup options. Here’s a deeper look.
Evan Engram Injury Update
Now in Denver, tight end Evan Engram was off to a quiet start in his first game with the Broncos. He had recorded three receptions on four targets for 21 receiving yards before a calf injury ended his day early.

There haven’t been any updates to his Week 2 status, so monitor his practices this week. Calf injuries are notoriously fickle, so it wouldn’t be shocking if the veteran tight end missed at least one week, if not more. In that case, players like Broncos receivers Pat Bryant or Troy Franklin would see their workload increase.

Engram Fantasy Outlook
On the surface, Engram recording one catch for every six routes run in his Denver debut looks good. He wasn’t exactly used like the versatile weapon I was hoping for, but if that rate came on a full complement of snaps, I’d be holding steady with my Engram stocks.
But it didn’t. A calf injury resulted in Engram playing just 29.6% of the offensive snaps, and now we have a real issue for a 31-year-old tight end on a team that doesn’t go on bye until Week 12.

The Broncos have real aspirations this season, and that leads me to believe they play it close to the vest, but that’s the last thing fantasy managers want to hear. I still think there is a valuable role for Engram to fill in Sean Payton’s offense, and maybe it takes form at the perfect time, but you’re going to have to roster a second tight end.
Brenton Strange and Chig Okonkwo are the two streaming options I would slot in front of whoever the Broncos elect to add routes to, be it Adam Trautman or Lucas Krull, who both ran north of 10 routes last week.
