We are more than a month into the 2025 fantasy football season and injuries continue creating significant roster challenges across the league. Despite delivering an impressive RB1 performance in Week 4, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving sustained multiple injuries that have already sidelined him for one contest. How should fantasy managers navigate Irving’s ongoing absence moving forward?
Bucky Irving Injury Update
Irving’s problems began during Tampa Bay’s 31-25 loss to Philadelphia in Week 4. The second-year running back suffered a foot sprain during the contest but managed to complete the game, even delivering a spectacular 72-yard touchdown reception in the process.
Initially, no visible signs of distress emerged as Irving finished the contest without apparent limitations. However, concerns arose on Monday when head coach Todd Bowles revealed that Irving would require an MRI examination.
The foot injury alone was anticipated to sideline Irving for multiple weeks. Reports later uncovered a more troubling development when ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that Irving is also battling a shoulder subluxation that he failed to disclose to the team until Tuesday of that week.
According to Schefter, the shoulder injury represents “more of an issue than his sprained foot” and is projected to sideline Irving for a minimum of two weeks. This makes the shoulder subluxation, rather than the foot sprain, the primary obstacle for his immediate availability.
Irving missed Week 5’s contest against Seattle. While he has not been officially ruled out for Week 6 at this stage of the week, fantasy managers can confidently assume he will not play against the San Francisco 49ers. Irving did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday. Spoiler alert: He won’t practice on Friday either.
Wednesday brought a mixed update from Bowles regarding Irving’s recovery progress. According to Greg Auman of Fox Sports, Bowles stated: “It’s still his ankle and still his shoulder. He’s getting better by the day, so we’ll see.” Irving was not observed at Wednesday’s walkthrough practice. Do not expect to see him participate at all this week.
The shoulder subluxation creates instability in the joint after it partially dislocates. This condition would be particularly problematic for a running back who frequently lowers his shoulder to break tackles and absorb contact throughout games.
While Bowles’ comments represent better news than the alternative, fantasy managers should temper their expectations for a Week 7 return as well. The most probable scenario remains Irving returning after Tampa Bay’s Week 9 bye, which would provide additional recovery time for both injuries.
Irving Fantasy Outlook
Irving has served as Tampa Bay’s undisputed RB1 since claiming the role from Rachaad White late last season. Through four games before his injury, he accumulated 430 yards from scrimmage, ranking sixth in the NFL at any position and establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Buccaneers’ offensive attack.
Irving continues to be viewed as both the present and future solution in Tampa Bay’s backfield. Fantasy managers should maintain confidence about utilizing him as an RB1 option for the season’s second half when he returns to full health.
However, managers must secure replacement options for at least the next two weeks and potentially longer based on his rehabilitation timeline.
With Irving unavailable, Tampa Bay’s backfield duties have transferred completely to White. During Irving’s absence against Seattle, White commanded 80% of the snaps while Sean Tucker contributed just 21% in a supporting capacity.
This distribution contradicted expectations of a committee approach between White and Tucker. Instead, White managed the overwhelming majority of touches with Tucker functioning primarily as a change-of-pace option to provide White with occasional rest periods.
White has maintained his characteristic inefficiency as a runner due to his limitations in power and vision between the tackles. However, volume supersedes efficiency in fantasy football, and White received substantial volume during Irving’s Week 5 absence.
Fantasy managers should anticipate White continuing to receive significant touches throughout Irving’s extended absence. Despite averaging only 2.9 yards per carry against Seattle, White’s 14 carries and four targets generated sufficient volume for viable fantasy production, enhanced by his two touchdowns.
Tucker’s limited involvement makes him primarily a deep league consideration rather than a priority addition. At this stage, he serves as White’s handcuff for the upcoming weeks rather than a standalone fantasy asset.
White remains the clear beneficiary of Irving’s absence and should be viewed as a dependable weekly RB2 option until Irving achieves full health. His pass-catching capabilities and guaranteed volume make him a valuable fantasy contributor during this extended period.
