The Tampa Bay Buccaneers prepare for a difficult Week 11 road matchup against the Buffalo Bills with continued uncertainty surrounding their explosive running back. Bucky Irving has been sidelined for over six weeks with foot and shoulder injuries that have proven far more severe than initially anticipated. Will fantasy football managers finally see their star running back return to the field for the stretch run?
Bucky Irving Injury Update
Irving has been out since suffering his injuries during Tampa Bay’s Week 4 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Tampa Bay’s decision to keep him on the active roster rather than placing him on injured reserve initially suggested they expected a brief absence. That choice now looks misguided, as Irving has missed five consecutive games with no clear end in sight.
Had the Bucs used injured reserve, Irving would have been eligible for activation after Week 8. Instead, they kept him on the 53-man roster while he sits out week after week. The prolonged timeline reveals these injuries have been far more problematic than the organization initially believed.
Irving did not practice all week leading up to the team’s Week 10 game against the New England Patriots. He was ruled out Friday, extending his absence to a fifth consecutive game. The bye week in Week 9 provided extra recovery time, yet Irving emerged from it showing no signs of progress.
Head coach Todd Bowles has offered minimal encouraging news throughout the entire absence. Bowles mentioned Irving had progressed enough to run, but emphasized the shoulder issue remains the primary concern since Irving hasn’t taken any contact. That lack of contact work suggested he was still multiple steps away from being game-ready.
On Monday, Greg Auman offered this update: “No real injury news from Todd Bowles — no expectation of Godwin, Irving or Reddick returning to practice this week right now”. Head coach Todd Bowles also said Monday that he doesn’t expect Irving to play Week 11 against the Bills.
However, despite previous reports that he would not practice this week, Irving was spotted at Wednesday’s practice. The Bucs held a walkthrough, which means no contact. That remains the final hurdle Irving must overcome. He has to prove he can absorb contact on his shoulder. Irving will almost certainly be listed as limited.
This represents a huge step in what fantasy managers hope is an imminent return to the field. By no means does this mean Irving will play on Sunday. But it does suggest that perhaps the fears that his injury is season-ending were a bit overblown.
At the very least, it’s progress. It’s great to see Irving back on the field in any capacity after six weeks of absence. Hopefully, Irving is back within the next week or two.
Irving Fantasy Outlook
Irving’s absence has coincided with Tampa Bay’s offensive struggles, particularly their inability to generate explosive plays in the running game. During the first four weeks of the season, Irving established himself as the clear RB1, producing efficiently both as a rusher and receiver.
Rachaad White has handled the full workload during Irving’s absence, and the results have been underwhelming.

White had an opportunity to prove this backfield should operate with a more balanced split, but he’s failed to replicate the big plays that made Irving so valuable. His longest rush this season measures just 16 yards, while his longest reception sits at 18 yards. These numbers demonstrate the stark difference in dynamism between White and Irving.
The Week 11 matchup against the Buffalo Bills on the road represents a challenging environment where Tampa Bay could desperately use Irving’s explosiveness.
If Irving does return at some point, he’ll immediately reclaim his role as the lead back. His talent level and proven production make him irreplaceable in Tampa Bay’s offensive scheme. The question is whether that return happens in time to matter for fantasy purposes, and whether he can maintain his health, as we still don’t know the exact nature of his shoulder injury.
