San Francisco enters their Week 14 bye following a road victory over the Cleveland Browns. Brandon Aiyuk continues working through extensive rehabilitation as his recovery from devastating knee injuries stretches past initial projections. Should fantasy football managers retain hope for any meaningful 2025 contribution?

Brandon Aiyuk Injury Update
Aiyuk has been sidelined since October 20, 2024, when he tore both his ACL and MCL in his right knee during San Francisco’s matchup against Kansas City. The injury has kept him out of all team activities throughout the 2025 season as he works through what has become a more complex rehabilitation process than originally anticipated.
Early in the season, the Week 6-10 range was floated as a potential return window for Aiyuk. Obviously, that timeline has come and gone without materialization. We’re now in Week 14, and Aiyuk remains nowhere close to taking the field.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed this week that the team would not open Aiyuk’s 21-day practice window before entering the bye. This marks multiple consecutive weeks the team has been asked about designating Aiyuk for return with the same response each time.
General manager John Lynch was asked on KNBR whether it was realistic that Brandon Aiyuk could play for the 49ers this season. “Realistic? I’m not sure,” Lynch said. “Hopeful”. This report came from Mike Maiocco, who covers the team for NBC Sports Bay Area.
Lynch’s comments pretty much affirm what has been clear for weeks: Aiyuk will not be playing any football this season. The shift from earlier optimism to “not sure” about realistic return chances represents a significant acknowledgment that time has run out for a 2025 comeback.
San Francisco Chronicle reporter Matt Barrows previously painted a realistic picture of what Aiyuk’s potential return might actually look like. “It could be a situation where they’ve opened his window, he’s able to practice, he’s able to get a running start on the offseason, but not risk himself in a game,” Barrows said. “That may be what we’re heading for.”
The 49ers are on bye in Week 14 before returning to face Tennessee in Week 15. Even if San Francisco opens Aiyuk’s practice window immediately after the bye, the earliest he would realistically play at this point would be Week 16 at the absolute earliest.
Given the circumstances, fantasy managers can already reasonably conclude that Aiyuk will not contribute this season. At this stage, he’s been away from competitive football for more than 13 months with just four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Aiyuk’s Fantasy Outlook
The harsh reality is that Aiyuk will not contribute anything for fantasy managers this season. Lynch’s admission that a return isn’t realistic should be the final signal for anyone still holding him to move on immediately.
Aiyuk had built an impressive resume before the injury, posting consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023. He established himself as one of the NFL’s premier receivers and San Francisco’s unquestioned WR1. None of that matters for fantasy managers in 2025.

Perhaps the 49ers get their top receiver back for the NFL playoffs as their season is likely to extend into January. That would represent a nice boost for their Super Bowl aspirations. But for fantasy purposes, Aiyuk’s season is effectively over.
If you’ve held onto Aiyuk this season, the best time to drop him was about three weeks ago. The second best time to drop him is now.
Fantasy managers competing for championships cannot afford to waste bench space on a player the general manager admits probably won’t play. The waiver wire almost certainly offers more reliable options for the stretch run.
Lynch’s “hopeful” but not “realistic” assessment should remove any lingering doubt. Drop Aiyuk with confidence and reallocate that roster spot to players who can actually help you win fantasy championships over the next month.
