Amon-Ra St. Brown Injury Update: Should Fantasy Managers Worry About the Lions WR?

Amon-Ra St. Brown hopes to rebound from a truly dismal performance, but is currently dealing with a knee injury. Will the Lions WR play on Thursday?

The Detroit Lions prepare for their must-win Week 17 Christmas Day road matchup against the Minnesota Vikings as they try to keep their extremely narrow playoff hopes alive. Amon-Ra St. Brown appeared on Monday’s estimated injury report as a non-participant with a knee injury, creating some concern on a short week. Will fantasy football managers have their superstar wide receiver available Thursday?

Amon-Ra St. Brown Injury Update

St. Brown was listed as DNP on Monday’s estimated practice report with a knee injury. That is not ideal with the Lions playing on a short week, but there was no noticeable injury during last week’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The absence looks more like maintenance than a new, serious issue at this point.

Head coach Dan Campbell described the issue as “irritation” that popped up on Monday. He said the team is hopeful it’s nothing serious.

The Lions need to win Thursday to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, as they likely must win out and get help to sneak into a wild card spot. St. Brown is as tough as they come. He went DNP-DNP-DNP two weeks ago with a low ankle sprain suffered on Thanksgiving and still played the following week, helping fuel a key win despite missing all of practice. Given that history, it seems unlikely he would miss this week’s game over what appears to be a minor knee issue.

Tuesday’s practice report will be telling. If St. Brown is listed as at least limited, he should be good to go for Christmas Day. A continued DNP on Tuesday and Wednesday would raise the level of concern, but the current expectation should be that he plays through the knee issue, just as he did with the recent ankle sprain.

St. Browns’ Fantasy Outlook

St. Brown failed to reach double-digit fantasy points last week for just the third time all season, excluding the game he left in the first quarter with the ankle injury. He has otherwise been one of the most consistent high-end WR1 options in fantasy. The last time he faced the Vikings, he recorded nine catches for 97 yards, showing he can produce in this matchup even when the surface numbers look tough.

On paper, Minnesota presents a challenging assignment. But the Vikings are playing out a lost season, while the Lions have everything to play for and should lean heavily on their best player in the passing game. As long as St. Brown gets back to at least limited participation by Tuesday or Wednesday, fantasy managers should treat him as a locked-in WR1 for Week 17.

If St. Brown surprisingly does not play, Jameson Williams would project as a high-end WR1 volume swing in an offense that would need to funnel targets somewhere. Isaac TeSlaa would enter the streaming radar as a deeper-league option who could see an expanded role without St. Brown. However, given St. Brown’s track record and the stakes for Detroit, the most reasonable expectation is that he suits up and plays a near-every-down role.
