The Atlanta Falcons are ready to take the next step after missing the postseason for the seventh straight year. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr., drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, stepped into the starting role at the end of last season and continues to show signs of growth as he develops into a top-tier talent.
Head coach Raheem Morris is entering his second season with the Falcons and knows the team’s success will largely depend on Penix’s progress. With plenty of weapons on offense, Penix’s ability to step up and lead is expected to be a major factor for Atlanta in 2025.
Morris spoke to reporters recently and shared his perspective on Penix’s development as he heads into his first full season as the team’s starter.

Raheem Morris Shares Insight on Michael Penix Jr.’s Development
During OTAs, Morris offered some candid thoughts about Penix’s journey so far.
“He’s finding his voice,” Morris said. “When you take over at that quarterback spot, there’s a certain humility about playing the position. Then it becomes a certain confidence about playing the position. And then it eventually turns into almost an arrogance about playing the position, where it becomes non-negotiable.”
Morris continued, “And we’re not there yet. I don’t think we will be for a little bit, but I think he’s at the mode of where he’s starting to get the confidence to figure out how to get to that moment. Those points on those quarterbacks who just got a little something different.”
The Falcons are putting their trust in Penix to grow into the role this year. As a rookie, Penix appeared in five games (three starts), completing 61 of 105 passes (58.1%) for 775 yards, with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He also added a rushing score, showing flashes of the dual-threat ability that made him a first-round pick.
Penix’s Growth Will Be Key to Falcons’ Playoff Push
Atlanta’s offense was already solid in 2024, finishing 10th in the NFL with a 79.8 Offense+ grade. With established weapons like Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts, the Falcons have the firepower to compete in a tough NFC South.
Morris and the coaching staff have been working to build continuity around Penix. Kirk Cousins, signed last offseason, is expected to take on a backup role or could potentially be moved if Penix continues to establish himself as the team’s franchise quarterback.
As the Falcons kick off their 2025 campaign, the stage is set for Penix to take the reins. If he can continue to grow and play with confidence, Atlanta could finally end its playoff drought, and make some noise in the process.
