The Atlanta Falcons are going through a lot of changes. They have a new head coach, general manager, and president of football operations. Their newest change is bringing in defensive back Sydney Brown, who could help out their rising secondary.
Who Benefits From the Sydney Brown Trade
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Brown’s trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Falcons as ‘a complicated pick swap.” A few minutes later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the full details of the transaction.
“Falcons and Eagles swapped fourth- and sixth-round picks, with Atlanta also acquiring S Sydney Brown,” Schefter wrote on X. “Picks No. 114 and 197 to the Eagles in exchange for picks No. 122, 215 and Sydney Brown.”
In terms of draft capital, the Eagles do move up eight spots. In Round 4, they go from 122 to 114. They also move up in Round 6, going from 215 to 197. So, even though there are a lot of moving pieces, Philly does gain some ground in the draft.
This is the 19th trade since the new league year kicked off last week. The league never has had this much trade activity this early in the new league year. https://t.co/R7rptJ8sif

Brown has been in the league for 3 seasons. During that stretch, he has a total of 2 interceptions, including a pick-six. Brown is also only 25, meaning that he has more room to grow and develop in Atlanta.
The Falcons will pair Brown with fellow safeties Xavier Watts and Jessie Bates III. Watts had a great rookie season, ranking 7th and earning a B grade on PFSN’s safety impact metric.
Bates is one of the best safeties in the league, having earned several All-Pro selections throughout his career. So Atlanta could have one of the best safety trios in the NFL with Watts, Brown, and Bates.
In terms of how things look for Philly, they will need a safety. In addition to the Brown trade, Philadelphia also lost Reed Blankenship to the Houston Texans in free agency. Great safety play was a big part of the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning defense in 2024, so they have been busy trying to fill that role.
According to Adam Schefter, after trading Brown, the Eagles brought back Marcus Epps on a one-year deal. Epps has played in the league since 2019 and has been a part of the Eagles during the 2019-2022 and 2025 seasons.
More safety moves: after trading safety Sydney Brown to the Falcons earlier Friday, the Eagles now have reached agreement on one-year deals with safeties Marcus Epps and J.T. Gray. Epps spent last season with the Eagles, Gray with the Bucs, Broncos and Ravens. pic.twitter.com/raQ7ZnmqJl

Moreover, the NFC East franchise also signed J.T. Gray, another safety who has so far played eight seasons in the league.

If the Eagles want a new face in the safety room, they could look for one in the draft. The good news for them is that this is a strong safety draft class.
According to PFSN’s Big Board, there are four safeties in the top 50 players. The Eagles could look to draft a top prospect, such as Dillon Thieneman from Oregon (ranked 19th) or Emmanuel McNeil-Warren from Toledo (ranked 33rd).
