Andy Reid has been a head coach for each of the past 27 NFL seasons, including the past 13 with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has been one of the most successful coaches of all time, but retirement could be in the near future. One of their former defensive backs recently speculated on the situation and named his potential replacement.
Bucky Brooks Predicts Next Head Coach to Replace Andy Reid in Chiefs
Reid will be 68 years old when the 2026 NFL season kicks off, so his days in his days as the head coach of the Chiefs could potentially be numbered. The franchise may need to start planning its strategy for the position when it eventually loses the legendary coach, and one of its former players believes he has the answer.
Bucky Brooks recently discussed the situation and reminded fans that Reid will walk away at some point. He also mentioned a familiar name as his potential replacement when that day eventually comes.
“Whether or not Eric Bieniemy is the best play caller or tactician doesn’t matter. His presence provides something within that locker room that was lacking in terms of accountability, discipline, and detail. Also, the elusive thing that has gotten away from him is a head coaching job.”
“His best opportunity to probably land a head coaching job would be from within Kansas City because there would be enough people that would advocate for him. If an when Andy Reid walks away, he’s better served to get that job than any other,” stated Brooks.
Eric Bieniemy recently returned to the Chiefs during the 2026 offseason to become their offensive coordinator, replacing Matt Nagy, who departed to take the same position with the New York Giants. Bieniemy previously spent ten years with the Chiefs, but left after the 2022 season to seek new opportunities.
His long history with the franchise suggests him as a logical candidate to eventually take over for Reid as their head coach. Brooks believes he’s a top candidate to do so, despite his inability to land a different head coaching job. He has been interviewed for many different openings, but for whatever reason, he has yet to be hired to fill any of the vacancies.
Reid has won three Super Bowl rings with the Chiefs, so he would potentially be leaving giant shoes to fill. Bieniemy can help his case as a candidate this year if he can get their offense back on track.
They finished fourth or better among all offenses in PFSN’s Impact Rankings in all five of his seasons as their offensive coordinator, but 11th or worse in all three seasons since his departure.
