EXCLUSIVE: Ethan Bonner’s NFL Journey: From Undrafted Cornerback to PAC-Fueled Future

Miami Dolphins CB Ethan Bonner opens up on his NFL journey, PAC mentorship, and life after football in this exclusive PFSN feature interview.

For Miami Dolphins cornerback Ethan Bonner, every day in the NFL feels like an opportunity to prove he belongs. The former Stanford standout entered the league in 2023 as an undrafted free agent, and since then, his path has been defined by persistence, humility, and a relentless work ethic.

With seven regular season appearances under his belt and a chance to earn a bigger role following Jalen Ramsey’s trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 25-year-old is approaching this season with the same mindset that got him here: nothing is given, everything is earned.

But Bonner’s story isn’t just about chasing playing time or battling for roster spots. Thanks to his involvement with PAC (Pro Athlete Community), he’s also preparing for the next chapter of his life — one that extends well beyond the gridiron. PAC’s mission is to connect professional athletes with top business minds and mentors, providing them with the tools to thrive in arenas far removed from sports. For Bonner, those resources have already left a lasting impact.

PAC Mentorship Guides Athletes From NFL Careers to Business Success

When Bonner first connected with PAC, he wasn’t sure what to expect. What he discovered was a network of people willing to share their stories, lessons, and opportunities for growth.

Through PAC, he met Mark Clayton, the former Ravens and Rams wide receiver who successfully transitioned into entrepreneurship with his LIVV Audio luxury sport headphone line. Bonner also struck up a relationship with Howard Lerman, CEO of Roam, an AI-driven “Office of the Future.” The access to such leaders has given him a perspective on how athletes can extend their influence well beyond their playing careers.

“It’s cool to meet people and kind of hear their stories and learn about what they’re doing outside of the field,” Bonner explained. “I realize a lot of these guys have a lot of depth to them, and they’re more than just an athlete. They can bring a lot to the table other than just their ability on the field.”

One area Bonner is especially drawn to is real estate. He’s already sought advice from former NFL quarterback Brett Hundley, who has found success running an Airbnb business in Scottsdale, Ari. Conversations like these have opened Bonner’s eyes to what’s possible and given him the confidence to imagine life after football.

“I don’t have any properties right now, but it’s something I’ve looked into and something I definitely want to pursue after football,” he said. “Being able to talk to guys that have made that transition and hearing their success stories — it prepares us current players for what’s to come.”

How an Undrafted NFL Journey Shaped Ethan Bonner’s ‘Elite’ Mentality

The concept of being “elite” carries weight in PAC’s mission, and Bonner has embraced what that means. For him, it comes down to discipline and the lessons football has already instilled.

“There are a lot of translatable aspects of football that can be valuable in any field,” he said. “One thing that’s preached a lot is attention to detail. Being elite requires that level of doing the right things, not taking shortcuts. The small things turn into big things.”

That mentality has shaped how Bonner approaches every opportunity. Entering the league undrafted, he understood that nothing was guaranteed. Instead of seeing it as a setback, he treated it as motivation.

“Being undrafted is kind of a blessing in disguise,” he said. “You’ve got that chip on your shoulder because you weren’t picked. My mindset has always been to prove myself every day, whether it’s in practice or in the building. Nothing’s given, everything’s earned. That mindset keeps me grounded.”

It’s a message for younger players facing similar uncertainty, including well-known names like Shilo Sanders, trying to break into the league without the backing of draft status. His advice is simple: Focus on what you can control.

“There are a lot of factors in this league that you can’t control, but what you can control is your mindset, your attitude, and your effort. So coming in with your head screwed on straight and coming into work every day is the biggest thing. And trying to be present in the moment, not thinking about what the final cuts are going to look like. Is my name going to be on there?

“Focus on doing your best effort and the time and time being and just being present in it. At the end of the day, it is business, and it can be cutthroat, but there’s a lot of guys that have gotten cut several times.”

Bonner points to his teammate Raheem Mostert as an example: “He was cut five times, and in 2023 he had a 1,000-yard season. That shows you what perseverance can do.”

Bonner Focused on Earning His Roster Spot in 2025

While PAC has opened doors for Bonner’s future, his present is still rooted in competing for a role on one of the NFL’s most dynamic defenses. With Ramsey gone and a competition underway with Kendall Sheffield, Bonner knows that every rep counts.

“The same mindset applies here: come in every day with an attitude to get better and be ready to work,” he said. “You’re only as good as your last play. So I focus on being coachable, giving high effort, and maximizing my ability.”

That attitude is especially important as he recovers from an injury that forced him out of Miami’s Week 2 preseason matchup against the Detroit Lions. Though he remains cautious with details, Bonner is confident he’ll be ready to contribute this season.

“It’s not ideal, being banged up,” he admitted. “But I do plan to be out there this season. This is definitely something I will overcome.”

Bonner’s optimism is shared when he looks at the Dolphins as a whole. The team is coming off consecutive playoff appearances but is still searching for its breakthrough. In Bonner’s eyes, the ceiling doesn’t exist.

“We’ve got a lot of young, hungry guys, especially in the defensive back room,” he said. “We come in every day with a mindset to work and get better. I think we can be really good as a team and as a defense.”

Veteran leaders like Minkah Fitzpatrick provide an added boost, offering guidance and raising the level of play in the room. “Minkah’s been great to have around,” Bonner said. “Just having that veteran presence, that knowledge of the game, it elevates everybody.”

As for head coach Mike McDaniel, Bonner knows the pressure of unmet expectations hovers over the organization. Still, he believes in the team’s ability to deliver.

“Every coach in the league is under pressure,” he said. “We know we haven’t won a playoff game in a while, but our goal is to change that. Not just win one game, but go even further.”

For Bonner, the journey is about more than making tackles or breaking up passes. It’s about preparing himself — mentally, financially, and personally — for life after football. PAC has become a major part of that preparation, providing mentors, connections, and resources that will serve him long after his playing days are over.
