‘This Play Is Just a Joke’ — ESPN Analyst Rips Eagles’ Tush Push Play vs. Packers After Controversial No Call From Refs

The anticipated NFC Wild Card rematch between the Eagles and Packers on Monday Night Football, which concludes Week 10, has a direct impact on the NFC title race.

Special attention has centered on the refereeing, as the game carries elevated stakes for both sides: The Eagles are intent on protecting their lead after a bye, and the Packers need a win to recover from their loss to the Panthers in Week 9.

Officiating has thus become a key concern, as a controversial in-game call on an already controversial play prompted some immediate criticism.

Referees Failed To Call False Start on Eagles’ Tush Push

In one of the plays in the first quarter, the referees clearly failed to call a false start during a successful Tush Push attempt by the Eagles.

Although the play had no impact on the outcome because the drive did not yield any points, the blatant error committed by the referees drew attention and set the tone for officiating debates.

After the Eagles (who currently rank 12th in the PFSN Offense Impact with a C+ grade) began using the Tush Push extensively, all NFL teams voted on its validity. Most chose not to ban it this season, which angered ESPN’s Mike Greenberg.

The Tush Push is a variation of the “QB sneak” where players push the quarterback from behind to gain short but crucial yards in third- and fourth-down situations. Last season, the Eagles were about 98% successful in their attempts to use this play to gain a first down or touchdown.

The controversial MNF play further outraged Packers fans, since their franchise had pushed for the ban out of concern it could “damage” the sport. In May 2025, the proposal to ban the Tush Push was rejected by a vote of 22–10.

Packers Had a False Start Called on a Fourth-and-1

In contrast, a correct false start penalty against the Packers on fourth-and-1 ended their drive early in the second quarter. This sequence highlighted inconsistent officiating and escalated frustration among fans by casting doubt on the fairness of calls.

This type of situation highlights the difficulty referees face in calling false start penalties. However, when clear violations are not called, it ultimately leads to numerous problems for the NFL, including with perception of referee impartiality.
