Chiefs HC Andy Reid Makes Feelings Clear on Bringing Back Eric Bieniemy As Kansas City’s OC

Andy Reid welcomes Eric Bieniemy back to Kansas City, praising the reunion as the Chiefs look to reignite their high-powered offense.

The offseason will be an interesting one for the Kansas City Chiefs, who had a 6-11 record, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a late-season ACL/LCL injury.

One of the first moves they made was bringing back one of their own, former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Bieniemy has been away with the team for a few years, most recently spending time with the Chicago Bears. Here’s how Andy Reid reacted to his former staff’s return to the team.

What Did Andy Reid Share About Eric Bieniemy’s Return to Chiefs?

In 2013, Bieniemy joined the Chiefs as a running backs coach, a role he held for five seasons before being promoted to offensive coordinator. From the 2018 season to the 2022 season, he stayed in that role before joining the Washington Commanders as their offensive coordinator in 2023.

Following his one-year stint, Bieniemy joined the UCLA Bruins football team as offensive coordinator/associate head coach but was back in the NFL in the 2025 season as the Bears’ running backs coach.

With his return to the Chiefs, Reid had the following to say, according to ESPN’s Nate Taylor on X.

“Andy Reid on hiring Eric Bieniemy as the Chiefs’ OC: ‘He’s coming off a heck of a year with the Chicago Bears. We’re glad EB was able to come back in & jump in & bring all the knowledge he has to the table.'”

Adding on top of that, Taylor reported more from Reid.

“Andy Reid on his reunion with Eric Bieniemy: ‘I’ve had success (in the past) bringing guys back into the fold. I think everybody is excited. … I know everybody can function well together.'”

Under Bieniemy, the Chiefs were consistently one of, if not the best, offenses in the entire NFL. Here’s how the offense ranked each season according to PFSN’s NFL Offensive Impact Metric (OFFi).

2018 NFL Season

In the 2018 season, the Chiefs ranked first in the league with an impact score of 95.8 and a letter grade of A. This was their highest graded season under Bieniemy.

2019 NFL Season

In the 2019 season, the Chiefs finished with their worst ranking by impact score under Bieniemy. The team had an impact score of 86.8 and a letter grade of B, which ranked them third in the league. The fact that this was Bieniemy’s worst season says a lot, considering they were still a top offense in the league.

2020 NFL Season

The Chiefs finished the season with an impact score of 87.8 and a letter grade of B+. They ranked fourth in PFSN’s OFFi.

2021 NFL Season

The team ranked second in the league in PFSN’s OFFi, with an impact score of 88.5 and a letter grade of B+.

2022 NFL Season

In his final season before joining the Commanders, Bienemy led the offense to the top spot in PFSN’s OFFi. They finished with an impact score of 91.0 and a letter grade of A-.
