Is Emeka Egbuka Playing? Breaking Down Why the Buccaneers Phenom Isn’t in the Game on MNF vs. Lions

Despite being activated for the game against the Detroit Lions, lack of involvement led to worry that Emeka Egbuka wasn't fully healthy for the game.

The 2025 NFL season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so far has been a testament to their resillience. Despite being ravaged by injuries up and down the roster, the team has maaged to pull through for victories, and start 5-1 for the best record in the NFC through six weeks. However, as the games have progressed, their situation has only turned bleaker by the minute.

Last week, after already being without Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, they also lost superstar rookie Emeka Egbuka to a hamstring injury. Even though chances were low that he’d be available for the game against the Detroit Lions, a quick turnaround allowed him to be active for the game. However, through a quarter and a half, he hadn’t been available for a majority of the team’s play.

What Happened to Emeka Egbuka?

As the Lions took an early 7-0 lead after the first quarter, the involvement from Egbuka had been minimal in the offense. Targeted twice, he made one catch for four receiving yards, as the offense fo Tampa Bay struggled out of the gates.

But his overall involvement remained suspect. Through the first three drives, a returning Evans had been on the field for nine snaps, while Egbuka had nearly half the number at five.

It’s unclear if it was a precautionary move by head coach Todd Bowles for a promising wide receiver, or if the situation is one that the Buccaneers fans need to keep monitoring. A sensational start for the rookie has seen him tally 445 receiving yards through five games, before injuring his hamstring against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6.

Ranked 11th on PFSN’s WR Impact, his vitality for the Bucs increased mutifold after they lost Evans in the game once again, this time to a concussion and shoulder injury that immediately ruled him out for the game, as he limped off the field, before being carted off.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to have the same impact that he’s had for most of the season. Finishing the night with 58 receiving yards on four catches, it wasn’t for a lack of trying from the Bucccaneers.

Targeted 12 times, an excellent performance from the Lions secondary stifled any chances that the rookie may have had to truly get going. Instead, his subpar performance led to a brutal 24-9 loss for Tampa Bay.

It dropped them three places in the standings as well, as both the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit held the tiebreakers over them with a 5-2 record.
