Eagles Predicted To Sign 3-Time Pro Bowl DE in Free Agency As Cheap Alternative to Maxx Crosby Trade

Jadeveon Clowney posted 8.5 sacks at 33 for Dallas and would thrive alongside Jalen Carter in Vic Fangio's Eagles defense.

The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to rebound next season after a disappointing wild card loss. One way they are looking to improve is at the edge rusher position. A veteran name is available who could help the Eagles’ defense get back to their Super Bowl-winning ways.

Jadeveon Clowney Is Still Playing at a High Level

Despite being 33 years old, Clowney is still playing at a very solid level. This past season, the Dallas Cowboys brought him in as an edge rusher option after the team traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Clowney had a good season, recording 8.5 sacks. His career high in a season is 9.5, so the fact that he was only one sack behind that mark at 33 is very impressive.

Sacks are not the only measure of success. PFSN writer Jacob Infante also noted that Clowney ranked 15th in pass-rush win rate among edge rushers at 16.7%.

Clowney also had some of his best moments against elite competition last year. Arguably his best game was against the Kansas City Chiefs, when he brought down quarterback Patrick Mahomes twice in a Thanksgiving win.

Overall, Clowney had a very good 2025 season. He received a B- grade according to PFSN’s edge impact metric.

Why Clowney Would Be a Great Fit With the Eagles

With the Eagles pursuing Maxx Crosby and also showing interest in Trey Hendrickson, Clowney could be a good option for Philadelphia. If he goes to Philly, he would be entering a very good situation.

First, he would be playing under Vic Fangio. Fangio is highly regarded as one of the best defensive minds in the league. According to PFSN’s defensive impact metric, the Eagles ranked seventh.

Fangio has shown that he can work wonders with edge rushers during his time in the NFL. Last year, before Phillips was traded to the Eagles, he had only one performance graded above a B-. After the Eagles traded for him, Phillips had three games that graded at B- or higher.

Despite being in the league since 2014, Clowney and Fangio have never worked together, so this could be a great pairing for both. Even though Clowney has been in the league for a while, he could still learn some things from Fangio.

Clowney’s best years with the Houston Texans came when J.J. Watt was a dominant force. In Philadelphia, Clowney would have Jalen Carter on the defensive line. Despite some off-the-field issues, Carter is dominant on the field. He received an A- for his great season last year, according to PFSN’s DT impact metric.

Additionally, Clowney could aid the Eagles in a mentor-type role. The Eagles have edge rusher Nolan Smith Jr., who has flashed potential but still graded out as a C according to PFSN’s edge impact metric. With Clowney’s experience, he could be a great veteran presence to help Smith reach his potential. In conclusion, Clowney to the Eagles would be a great move to help their defensive line reach new heights.
