The New England Patriots have high hopes for Drake Maye after selecting him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maye won over the Pats after displaying impressive playmaking, arm talent, and athleticism throughout his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina.
Maye isn’t the only standout athlete in his family, though. His three older brothers — Luke, Cole, and Beau — shined in their respective sports, pushing Drake to be a better athlete.
How Many Siblings Does Drake Maye Have?
Maye grew up in a competitive household. And as the youngest sibling, he was always trying to keep up with his brothers.
According to Maye’s mother, Aimee, Drake was always trying to keep up with his siblings and prove himself. Growing up in his older brothers’ shadows made him an intense competitor.
“His heart just beat faster than the rest of them because he knew he was really in the game of his life here,” Aimee told ESPN. “[His thought process was], ‘I’ve got to fight for my right to play in the pickup game in the driveway or to play football in the backyard.’”
Who Is Luke Maye?
Luke Maye, the eldest of the four, left behind a legacy of his own at North Carolina. Luke played for the Tar Heels basketball team from 2015 to 2019. He was a third-team All-American and first-team All-ACC selection, and he played an integral role in their 2017 National Championship win.
He hit the game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds left to propel UNC past Kentucky in the Elite 8, sending the Tar Heels to the Final Four and eventually to the National Championship.
This shot is what Maye is most remembered for, but he also went on to play professionally in the NBA G League (with the Wisconsin Herd) and overseas (in Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Japan). He’s currently playing for the Ibaraki Robots in Japan.
Drake told ESPN that he lived in his brother’s shadow during his time at UNC. He said that when he and Luke walked around campus together, people would approach them — but only ask Luke for a photo.
Who Is Beau Maye?
Following in Luke’s footsteps, Beau Maye also pursued basketball at North Carolina. Joining the Tar Heels as a walk-on, Beau played during the 2022-23 season but chose not to return for the 2023-24 season.
Despite his brief tenure, the fact that Beau was able to make the Tar Heels’ roster speaks to his talent and the terrific athletic genes in the Maye family.
Who Is Cole Maye?
Cole took a different path from his brothers. Rather than pursuing basketball or football, Cole gravitated to baseball. After graduating high school early, Cole joined the Florida Gators in 2017.
Cole became the second member of the Maye family to win an NCAA National Championship, as he and the Gators won the 2017 NCAA National Championship.
The Maye family has certainly set a high bar for athletic excellence and competition. With Drake now stepping into the spotlight as the Patriots’ new franchise quarterback, we’ll see what other achievements and accolades he can add to the family’s trophy room.
