This season has been catastrophic for the Miami Dolphins. Despite the team’s woes, one player has been a superstar, and that is none other than running back De’Von Achane.
However, Achane’s status for the team’s final game of the season is uncertain. This has led the team to sign another running back to the roster ahead of this week’s game.
Miami Dolphins Sign Former National Champion Amid De’Von Achane Injury
The Dolphins enter Week 18 with a 7-9 record, knowing they have been eliminated from playoff contention. They will face the AFC East leader, the 13-3 New England Patriots, for their final game.
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Achane received a DNP, or Did Not Participate in Practice designation on both days due to a shoulder injury. Additionally, it was announced, “De’Von Achane (Shoulder) won’t practice again Friday.”

In PFSN’s RBi metrics, Achane ranks third in the league with an impact score of 87.3 and a letter grade of B+. This season, he’s rushed 238 times for 1350 yards and eight touchdowns. He’s also known for his receiving skills and has caught 67 passes for 488 yards and four touchdowns. He’s done all of this without missing a game, at least up to this point.
In response to the injury, the Dolphins added another running back to their active roster, Donovan Edwards. Adam Schefter reported, “Dolphins signed RB Donovan Edwards to their active roster off Washington’s practice squad and placed TE Darren Waller on injured reserve.”

Edwards is in his rookie year after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. He first signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent, spending time on their practice squad before joining the Washington Commanders’ practice squad, and now the Dolphins’ active roster.
Edwards is a former College Football National Champion, who won in 2023 with the Michigan Wolverines. Additionally, he was one of the cover athletes for the return of EA College Football 25. He finished his college career with 2251 rushing yards, 19 rushing touchdowns, 86 receptions, 797 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns.
Unfortunately for Edwards, he will be buried on the depth chart even if Achane doesn’t play this week. Touches will likely be split between second-year running back Jaylen Wright and rookie running back Ollie Gordon II. At the very most, he will maybe get a handful of touches over the Dolphins’ other two options.
