‘You Can’t Do That To Your Teammates’ — Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel Makes Feelings Clear on Tyreek Hill’s Viral End-of-Season Rant

The Miami Dolphins left much to be desired in 2024. Despite having one of the most explosive offenses in football, they struggled down the stretch, finishing with an 8-9 record and missing the playoffs. Frustration finally boiled over at the end of the season, and no player’s comments made bigger waves than those of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Hill, never one to shy away from speaking his mind, made it seem like he had played his last game for the Dolphins: “I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I got to do what’s best for my career. This is my first time I haven’t been in the playoffs, man. So I just got to do what’s best for me and my family. If that’s here or wherever the case may be, I’m finna open that door for myself.”

Speculation quickly began to swirl about his future in Miami. Since then, things have calmed down in South Beach, with the two sides meeting and getting on the same page. However, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel recently addressed the situation, making it clear how he felt about Hill’s remarks.

Mike McDaniel Sounds Off on Tyreek Hill’s Comments: ‘You Can’t Do That to Your Teammates’

During a special live episode of Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio and Chris Simms, McDaniel spoke about Hill’s end-of-season comments. While he acknowledged Hill’s frustration, he also emphasized the importance of accountability.

“Ultimately, as is every relationship, if you can work at something and go through things together, it ultimately makes it stronger,” McDaniel said.

“I think his relationship with his teammates was his motivation for clarifying his actions. If you’re trying to win, you can’t do that to your teammates… He was motivated by trying to win… Nobody likes losing, and we lost more than we won last year, and it’s not excusable, it’s not part of who we are.”

McDaniel’s words sent a clear message: Frustration is natural, but handling it the right way is what separates great teams from dysfunctional ones.

Hill’s status as a team leader made his comments more impactful, but in the end, his actions will speak louder than his words.

Hill Clears the Air on His Future in Miami

Despite the controversy, Hill also recently addressed his future with the Dolphins. During a live Super Bowl episode of “Up & Adams,” Kay Adams asked him if he wanted to stay in Miami, and his response was as direct as it gets.

“I do,” Hill said. “I don’t want to go nowhere. I love it, my family loves it, kids absolutely love being on the beach every morning… we are really building something special in Miami.”

He reiterated this in an interview with ProFootballTalk: “I’m taking full accountability for what I said. I’m gonna come back next year. I wanna stay with the Dolphins.”

If there were any lingering questions about his commitment, Hill shut them down. Since being traded to Miami in 2022, he has put up monster numbers, proving he didn’t need Patrick Mahomes to produce at an elite level.

In his first year with the Dolphins, he posted a career-high 1,710 receiving yards. The following season, he upped the ante with 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns.

While his production dipped slightly in 2024 — with just 959 yards and six touchdowns despite playing in all 17 games — injuries to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa played a big role.

Hill recently issued an apology to Tagovailoa and his other teammates for his end-of-season outburst.

“Tua, he’s my guy, always will be my guy, no matter what, man. I’m sure he understands my frustration, we all wanna win,” Hill said.

“Tua, he’s another competitor, he’s a hell of a competitor — a lot of people don’t know that — he’s a winner, he’s consistent. So, I’m looking forward to continuing to build our relationship even more. This is my public apology to you, Tua. I love you, bro.”

When Adams pressed him about the apology extending to the entire team, Hill said it did. However, he added that his teammates know his character and that he’s not the “hot-head” that some have made him out to be after he made those viral comments.

“They already know that, though,” Hill said. “They know I’m not that kind of player, though. A lot of people may say, ‘Oh, Reek is a hot-head,’ but all my teammates know — I come to work every day, I bust my tail, I show up to meetings on time, and I do what I gotta do.”

While Hill clearly regrets his comments and seems committed to the Dolphins, he recently turned heads once again with another viral rant.

Hill Sends a Message To the Dolphins’ Front Office

During a recent live stream, Hill called on Miami’s front office to “fix this sh**” and “add some motherf***** dogs in this b****.”

“We’ve got to come back. We got to put some pressure on motherf******,” Hill said. “Y’all got to fix this s***, come on. Add some motherf***** dogs in this b****. I compete, I love to compete, bruh.”

These comments made headlines as well and prompted some a response from Hill’s teammate, running back De’Von Achane.

“We got dogs. We just need more people to bring it out. You know what I’m saying?” Achane said on “Up and Adams” recently. “I wouldn’t say we need more, as in, like, got to get other people. … We know what we’re capable of. If we’re all on, I feel like we’re a hard team to beat.”

Last season, Miami missed the playoffs after winning just eight games while boasting the NFL’s 13th-ranked offense, 12th-ranked defense, and 29th-ranked special teams unit according to PFSN’s Offense+, Defense+, and Special Teams+ metrics.
