Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel Reveals Major Surgery for One of Miami’s Best Players

An injury to Tua Tagovailoa derailed any plans the Miami Dolphins had for the 2024 season. Instead, a year seen as a possible jump to championship contenders ended in the team missing the playoffs entirely. Further, frustration from the team became evident with potential trades looming on the horizon.

While some of the negativity around the team has simmered down, it is still a critical year for the Dolphins, and it begins with the offseason. However, for a large portion of the training camp, they’re going to be without Tyreek Hill, as revealed by head coach Mike McDaniel.

Miami To Miss Tyreek Hill, Says Head Coach Mike McDaniel

With the 13th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Miami is looking to score big and return with a vengeance next season. As a result, the NFL Scouting Combine is a critical opportunity for McDaniel to assess the talent pool in front of him.

But, before the official proceedings began, he was available for a conversation with the media, where the questions unavoidably turned to Hill’s status. With the way things ended last season, it was inevitable; as a result, it didn’t take long for McDaniel to face the music.

“Mike McDaniel said Tyreek Hill had surgery to repair ligament damage in his left wrist recently. It was not broken. McDaniel said the plan is for Hill to resume catching the football in the summer near training camp. He will spend the spring running and recovering.”

Seemingly, Hill will remain on the Dolphins’ roster, something that seemed less like a certainty with the way things shaped out last season. He had one of the worst seasons of his career, finishing with just 959 yards despite playing in all 17 games, a far cry from the back-to-back 1,700+ yards seasons he’d registered in 2022 and 2023.

After losing in the final game of the regular season and terminating all playoff hopes, Hill cut a desolate figure on the field and in the locker room.

“I’m opening the door. I’m out bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I got to do what’s best for my career,” he said, as part of a now infamous interview.

However, since then, he’s walked those comments back. First, in an appearance on “Up & Adams,” he apologized to his quarterback and gave the first hint of his return.

“Tua, he’s another competitor, he’s a hell of a competitor — a lot of people don’t know that — he’s a winner, he’s consistent. So, I’m looking forward to continuing to build our relationship even more. This is my public apology to you, Tua. I love you, bro.”

However, if there were any lingering doubts, those went away in smoke almost immediately during his conversation with Pro Football Talk. “I’m taking full accountability for what I said. I’m gonna come back next year. I wanna stay with the Dolphins.”

It might take a while before he officially joins the squad as McDaniel detailed, but it’s safe to assume that Hill being back with Miami is becoming more of a certainty by the day.
